People often say that kids today don’t respect their elders, and in some cases, that might be true. Young people should show more appreciation for those who helped build the world we live in now. But it’s also important to recognize that many young people do wonderful things every day that deserve more attention.
Here’s a story that proves it. I hope that by sharing this, we can inspire others to spread kindness, like ripples in a pond that reach far and wide.
In 2018, an 18-year-old named Evoni Williams was working her regular shift behind the counter at a Waffle House in Houston. It seemed like an ordinary day until she noticed an elderly man sitting at the counter.
He had an oxygen tank to help him breathe and was struggling to slice his food. Without thinking twice, Evoni stepped in to help the man, knowing his hands weren’t as strong as they used to be.
A customer named Laura Wolf was sitting nearby and saw what Evoni did. She was so moved by the young woman’s kindness that she couldn’t help but take a photo and share it on Facebook.
“She took his plate and started cutting up his ham without hesitation,” Laura wrote in her post. “To him, this may seem small, but I’m sure it was huge. With so much bad news in the world, I’m thankful to have seen this gesture of love and care to start my day.”
Within a week, Evoni’s simple act of kindness went viral. More than 40,000 people shared the story on Facebook. The post even caught the attention of Texas Southern University, which was so impressed by Evoni’s actions that they offered her a $16,000 scholarship.
For Evoni, who had just graduated from high school and was working at Waffle House to save money for college, this scholarship was life-changing.
Despite all the attention and praise she received, Evoni stayed humble. She told the Houston Chronicle, “I didn’t know the photo was taken until a couple of hours later.”
When asked why she helped the man, the 18-year-old simply said, “It’s just something I would do for anybody when I saw it. It was the right thing to do.”
Stories like this warm the heart and remind us that the world needs more people like Evoni—people who are willing to help others without expecting anything in return. It’s amazing that her small act of kindness led to such a big reward.
Please share this story on Facebook. It will encourage more people to be kind and caring in their daily lives.
