Will Smith made an impressive stage comeback at the BET Awards, performing his new song with a fiery ring and gospel choir.
Actor and musician Will Smith, 55, returned to the spotlight in a big way on Sunday night, marking his biggest live comeback since the Oscar incident. As part of the BET Awards, he presented his new single “You Can Make It” alongside singer Fridayy and the Sunday Service Choir.
The song had been released just two days earlier. Smith stood on a circular platform surrounded by a ring of fire and was joined by Fridayy and the gospel choir after his initial rap segment. To top it off, gospel icon Kirk Franklin, 54, surprised the audience as a special guest towards the end of the song.
Announcing his new song a few days prior on his official Instagram account, Smith wrote that music had always been there for him even in his darkest moments, to “uplift, help, and grow.” He humbly expressed his wish that his music could do the same for his fans, bringing “all the joy and light” that everyone deserves. Smith had mentioned in an interview in May that he had been in the studio for some time working on new music. He also hinted at a forthcoming album possibly titled “Dance in Your Darkest Moments.” Singer Teddy Swims, 31, revealed in another interview that he had recorded a song with Will Smith.
Smith has been actively reviving his music career in recent months. He also briefly appeared on stage at the Coachella Festival in April. During Reggaeton superstar J Balvin’s concert, Smith appeared in his iconic “Men in Black” outfit and performed the famous theme song from the 1997 blockbuster. Additionally, at the “Grammy Salute to 50 Years of Hip-Hop” at the end of last year, Smith delivered a medley of his greatest hits, including his 90s classic “Gettin’ Jiggy With It.” His wife Jada Pinkett Smith, 52, and their children Willow, 23, and Jaden, 25, supported him from the audience.
