The Power of Social Media: Mark Cropp’s Journey to a Fresh Start

Mark Cropp, a young man from New Zealand, had a tough life. After a failed drug deal, he ended up in prison for two years and three months. But when his time behind bars was coming to an end, Mark dreamed of a fresh start—a new life where he could take care of his partner and young daughter. However, one night in his jail cell, a drunken mistake would make that dream much harder to reach.

A Tattoo He Would Never Forget

One night in prison, Mark and his brother drank homemade alcohol, a strong brew made from fermented apples, bread, and sugar. As the alcohol took effect, they came up with a wild idea. Using a homemade ink mixture of toothpaste and melted plastic knives and forks, they tattooed Mark’s nickname, “Devast8,” in large, bold letters across his jaw and lower face.

At first, Mark didn’t think much of it. But when he woke up the next morning, his face was swollen and sore. Looking in the mirror, reality hit him hard.

“Before I knew it, I had this on my face… It was swollen like a bloody pumpkin,” Mark later recalled.

At the time, he tried to justify it. “You know, there was a long time where I would devastate everything I touched. I would end up devastating everyone I met or got close to,” he explained. “They would be disappointed with something I had done or said—I was always hearing, ‘that’s devastating.’”

Still, he quickly realized this tattoo would make his life much harder.

Facing Rejection

When Mark was released from prison, he was eager to turn his life around. He had work experience and was ready to find a job to support his family. But no matter where he applied, employers turned him away.

It wasn’t because of his past—it was because of his tattoo.

As soon as hiring managers saw the giant “Devast8” inked across his face, they lost interest. No one wanted to give him a chance.

Mark wanted to remove the tattoo, but there was a big problem—laser removal was expensive, and he didn’t have the money to pay for it.

Feeling hopeless, Mark decided to take one last shot at changing his life. He turned to social media.

A Cry for Help

Mark posted a selfie on Facebook, showing his face tattoo and explaining his situation. He was desperate for a job, a fresh start, and a chance to prove he had changed.

His story spread quickly. People shared his post, commented words of encouragement, and even offered him support. But the biggest surprise came from Sacred Tattoo, a tattoo shop in Auckland.

The shop’s team was touched by Mark’s story and wanted to help. They reached out to him with an incredible offer—free laser removal sessions to erase the tattoo from his face.

This was a turning point in Mark’s life.

A New Beginning

As the tattoo removal process began, Mark felt hope for the first time in a long while. But that wasn’t the only good news. Thanks to the power of social media, a scaffolding company called PR Contracting also noticed his story and decided to give him a chance.

They offered him a job, paying $22 an hour—finally giving him the opportunity to rebuild his life.

Mark’s journey is a powerful example of how social media can change lives. It started as a desperate plea but turned into a story of redemption, kindness, and second chances.
