On my 80th birthday, all I really wanted was to see my daughter, so I decided to surprise her with a visit. When she opened the door, she looked a bit uneasy and immediately asked, “Dad, what are you doing here?”
I smiled warmly and replied, “I just wanted to spend my birthday with you.” But her response wasn’t what I expected. “Dad, you can’t stay. I’ve got a lot going on.”
Feeling a bit hurt, I tried to suggest a solution, “I can wait on the sofa until you’re free,” but she shook her head and insisted, “No, Dad, you really need to leave right now.” Confused and a little disappointed, I slowly turned around and started walking back to my car.
As I walked away, I heard strange noises coming from inside the house. My concern grew, so I glanced through the window and was shocked to see two strangers moving around inside. Panic set in, and fearing for my daughter’s safety, I quickly called the police.
The officers arrived within minutes and cautiously approached the house. After a tense few moments, they came out with the two strangers in handcuffs. My daughter, with tears streaming down her face, rushed out to hug me tightly.
“Dad, I’m so sorry,” she sobbed. “I was trying to protect you. Those men broke in just before you arrived. I didn’t know what to do, and I didn’t want you to get hurt.”
A wave of relief washed over me as I held her close. “It’s alright, sweetheart. I’m just glad you’re safe,” I whispered, feeling thankful that everything turned out okay.
After we gave our statements to the police, who assured us that the intruders would face justice, my daughter and I spent the rest of the day together. What began as a simple birthday visit turned into the most unforgettable birthday I could have ever imagined.
