All I wanted for my 80th birthday was to see my daughter, so I decided to drive to her house and surprise her. When she opened the door, she looked a bit uneasy and asked, “Dad, why are you here?”
“I just wanted to spend my birthday with you,” I said with a big grin. But her response wasn’t what I expected. “Dad, you can’t stay,” she said, “I’m really busy right now.”
Feeling a bit hurt, I offered to just sit on the couch until she had some free time. But she insisted, “No, Dad, you really need to go right now.” Even though I didn’t want to, I turned and started walking back to my car.
As I was leaving, I heard some strange noises coming from inside the house. Worried, I peeked through the window and saw two unfamiliar people inside. My concern for my daughter’s safety grew, so I quickly called the police.
The cops arrived swiftly and approached the house with caution. After a tense few minutes, they came out with the two strangers in handcuffs.
My daughter ran out of the house, tears streaming down her face, and hugged me tightly. “I’m so sorry, Dad,” she cried. “I was trying to protect you. Those men broke in right before you got here. I didn’t know what to do, and I didn’t want you to get hurt.”
I hugged her back, feeling a huge sense of relief. “It’s okay, sweetheart. I’m just glad you’re safe.”
After listening to our story, the police assured us that the intruders would be dealt with. Despite everything, this turned out to be the best birthday I could have imagined, all because I got to spend it with my daughter.
