Patti Scialfa, a key member of the E Street Band and Bruce Springsteen’s wife, recently opened up about a deeply personal battle she’s been fighting for years. At the Toronto International Film Festival on September 8, during the premiere of Rock Diary:
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Patti revealed that she was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2018. This type of cancer affects the immune system, forcing her to make a heart-wrenching decision: stepping back from touring with Bruce and the band.
“This impacts my immune system, so I have to be mindful of what I do and where I go,” she shared at the event. Her words were calm but filled with strength. “Occasionally, I’ll join a show or two and sing a few songs on stage—that’s been a real treat. It’s my new normal, and I’m OK with that.”
It hasn’t been an easy road for Patti, who has always been a vibrant presence on stage. In a separate interview with Asbury Park Press, she spoke about why she has been limiting her appearances during Springsteen’s most recent tour, which started in February 2023. While her health was a big factor, it wasn’t the only reason she stepped back.
“With so many musicians on stage, I didn’t feel as needed,” Patti explained. “After a few shows, I realized everything was running smoothly, and I could step back without taking anything away.” Her words showed her confidence in the band’s ability to carry on, even without her constant presence.
Instead of spending her time on the road, Patti shifted her focus to things closer to home. She dedicated herself to finishing her solo album, a project she had struggled to complete while Bruce was around. “Bruce is in the studio all the time,” she said with a laugh. “This was an opportunity for me to focus on my work.”
Her time off stage also allowed her to embrace her role as a grandmother to little Lily Springsteen, born in July 2022. Spending time with Lily has been a source of immense joy for Patti. Between her music and family life, she’s found a new rhythm that fits her current situation.
While Patti has been navigating her health challenges, Bruce has been facing his own struggles. In September 2023, he had to postpone the rest of his tour due to ongoing treatment for peptic ulcer disease. Then, in early summer 2024, vocal issues forced him to cancel three more shows. The Springsteens have been facing these trials together, leaning on each other through the tough times.
Despite these hurdles, Patti’s resilience shines brightly. She’s learned to adapt to a “new normal” that balances her health, family, and creative passions. Music has always been her lifeline, and though her role has changed, it’s clear that her spirit hasn’t wavered.
Patti Scialfa’s story is one of courage, love, and determination. Her journey is a reminder that even when life takes an unexpected turn, it’s possible to find beauty and strength in the changes. Let’s keep Patti in our thoughts as she continues her brave fight against multiple myeloma.
