Once upon a time, there was a woman who thought she was lucky to marry a wealthy man. He seemed to have everything: money, power, and a life full of luxury. He spoiled her family with expensive gifts and even paid off her sister’s credit card debts.
He helped her brother get a job at a top company with a high salary. Life seemed perfect for her and her family, thanks to him.
But everything changed when she discovered that her husband was unfaithful. The first time it happened, she had just given birth to their daughter, Kelly. She was vulnerable, feeling overwhelmed by new motherhood, and thought about leaving him.
However, her relatives, who adored her husband, convinced her to stay. They told her it was important for Kelly to grow up in a stable home, with both parents present. They even told her that she wasn’t being the best wife, since she was pregnant and should give her husband another chance.
Reluctantly, she stayed with her husband, thinking maybe things would improve. But they didn’t. A few years later, when Kelly was about 12 years old, the husband had an affair again. This time, the woman was done. She decided to divorce him.
But her family, once again, urged her to stay, fearing the public shame a divorce would bring to their name. They didn’t want to lose the luxury and generosity her husband offered, and neither did her parents. Her husband’s wealth was an important part of their lives.
Despite the pressure, she went through with the divorce, but things didn’t go the way she had hoped. Her ex-husband, with his money and connections, hired the best lawyers and won custody of Kelly.
The woman was heartbroken. She still received alimony and a generous settlement, but she lost her daughter.
For years, the woman tried to stay in touch with Kelly, sending letters and asking to visit. But Kelly, influenced by her father and grandparents, refused to see her mother. They filled Kelly’s head with stories, telling her that her mother was a hypocrite for not forgiving her father, even though he had apologized.
“Your mother is selfish,” they said. “She’s the one who ruined everything.” And over time, Kelly grew to believe them. When she became a teenager, she was convinced that her mother was a terrible person and wanted nothing to do with her.
However, Kelly’s story took a turn when she faced her own struggles in life. As she got older, Kelly found herself in financial trouble. She had to make tough decisions about her future, and one of those decisions was whether or not to continue her education.
She was running out of money and had no way to pay for college.
That’s when she finally reached out to her mother. It wasn’t because she wanted to rebuild their relationship. No, Kelly was desperate for money. She needed help to continue her studies, and her mother was the only one who could provide it.
The woman, though hurt by the years of silence, agreed to help her daughter. But there was a catch. Kelly had to sign a contract stating that she would give up her right to inherit her mother’s wealth. In exchange for her education, Kelly would have no claim to her mother’s estate.
The woman had made up her mind about who would inherit her assets—her goddaughter, Laura, who had become like a daughter to her over the years.
Kelly, though upset, reluctantly agreed. After all, she had no other choice if she wanted to continue her education.
Years passed, and Kelly’s life slowly began to improve. She finished her studies, got a high-paying job in accountancy, and started to rebuild her life. But her ex-husband’s life was falling apart. He had been fired from his job, and a former employee sued him.
He was facing financial ruin, but instead of changing his spending habits, he continued to live as if nothing had happened, spending money on luxuries, including Kelly’s college tuition.
Meanwhile, Kelly’s mother continued to work hard to rebuild her own life. She was determined not to let her relationship with Kelly be based solely on money.
“I won’t lie,” she said to her friend Tina, “it hurts to think that Kelly only wants to talk to me now because she needs money. But I’ll still help her. I’m her mother, after all.”
But the woman wasn’t just thinking about Kelly. She had another person in her life who had shown her love and loyalty—Laura, her goddaughter. Over the years, Laura had become someone the woman could count on, and she felt that Laura deserved her wealth far more than Kelly did.
The woman wanted Laura to inherit everything she had, not her daughter, who only came back into her life when she needed something.
Kelly, on the other hand, began to realize that her mother wasn’t as terrible as she had once thought. But the damage had already been done. The years of separation, the hurtful words from her father and grandparents, and the bitterness had left a mark on their relationship.
The woman’s family worried about her decision, telling her that it could ruin any chance of mending her relationship with Kelly. But the woman stood firm. She didn’t want her relationship with Kelly to be built on money. She wanted something deeper.
In the end, the woman’s decision left everyone asking: Was it right for her to leave everything to her goddaughter, Laura, or should she have given it all to Kelly, her daughter, who only came back when she was desperate for help?
What do you think? Was the mother’s decision justified? Should she have forgiven Kelly’s actions and given her everything? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

She absolutely did the right thing. As an adult, Kelly could have reached out to her mother to see what kind of person she really was. She was in her life for 12 years, so she had memories and knowledge of who/ what her mother was.
