Single Mom of Four Buys Used Car, Owner Tells Her to Look In Trunk When She Gets Home — Story of the Day

Jennifer was a single mother of four young children, struggling to make ends meet after her husband, Adam, walked out on them. When she told him she was pregnant with their fourth child, he snapped.

“Another child to feed? No way! I’ve had enough!” Adam shouted before storming out of their small trailer, filing for divorce soon after.

Jennifer was devastated. She never imagined raising their children alone, especially with how tough things already were financially. But Adam never looked back. He stopped sending money, claiming he was unemployed and that his lack of a college degree made it impossible to find a job.

With four children depending on her, Jennifer had no choice but to act fast. As soon as she recovered from childbirth, she began searching for work. She walked for miles, knocking on doors, applying at restaurants and shops, only to hear the same response over and over again.

“We can’t hire mothers with young children. Something always comes up—kids get sick, babysitters cancel. I’m sorry, it’s too much trouble for us,” one employer told her bluntly.

Desperate, Jennifer expanded her search beyond her neighborhood and into the city. She borrowed money for a cab ride and asked a kind neighbor to watch her children for a few hours. When she arrived, she noticed a hotel had a sign in the window: Housekeeping Staff Wanted—Urgent!

Jennifer rushed inside. “Are you still hiring?” she asked, out of breath.

The HR manager looked her over and nodded. “Yes, we desperately need staff. Summer is coming, and soon we’ll be fully booked. Can you start tomorrow?”

Jennifer’s heart raced with excitement. “Yes! Thank you so much!”

Relieved that she finally had a job, Jennifer returned home to share the news with her children. But reality quickly set in—getting to work would be a challenge. The daily cab fare was nearly $30, and she couldn’t afford it long-term. Public transportation wasn’t an option either, as the bus route didn’t reach the trailer park.

She needed a car.

Jennifer searched online for second-hand vehicles and found one that might work. It wasn’t fancy, but it would get her where she needed to go. She met with the owner, a kind-looking man named Jeff, and hesitantly asked, “Would you consider selling it for $5,000? I’m a single mom of four, and I just found a job, but I really need a car to keep it.”

Jeff looked at her thoughtfully before nodding. “If you can bring me the money by tomorrow, it’s yours for $5,000.”

Jennifer’s heart soared with gratitude. “Thank you! You have no idea how much this means to me.”

But when she applied for a bank loan, her request was denied due to bad credit. She felt like she was running out of options. Moving to the city wasn’t possible—rent was too expensive, and her eldest son, Ethan, had just started school nearby.

Then she remembered something—her late mother’s gold chain necklace, a precious family heirloom. Selling it was heartbreaking, but her children’s future came first.

“I’m so sorry, Mom. I have to do this,” she whispered, clutching the necklace before heading to a pawnshop.

The pawnshop owner examined it carefully. “I can give you $5,500 for this.”

Jennifer exhaled in relief. “Yes, thank you!”

The next day, she returned to Jeff’s dealership, placing an envelope filled with cash in his hands. “Here it is. Thank you again for agreeing to this price. You have no idea how much this will help me and my children.”

Jeff smiled warmly. “Congratulations on your new car. It’s a great choice.”

While Jennifer signed the paperwork, Jeff discreetly placed something inside the car’s trunk. As she prepared to drive away, he called out, “By the way, check the trunk when you get home. I left something for your kids.”

Jennifer smiled, not thinking much of it, and drove home. Days passed, and she became so busy with work and taking care of her children that she completely forgot about checking the trunk—until she found a note inside the glove compartment.

“I hope you and your children liked the gift I left in the trunk. May it be of great help to you.”

Curious, she rushed outside and opened the trunk. At first, she saw nothing but a white envelope tucked in the corner. When she picked it up, her breath caught in her throat. It was the same envelope she had given Jeff, the full $5,000 untouched.

Tears filled her eyes as she clutched the envelope to her chest. Overwhelmed by the unexpected kindness, she drove straight back to the dealership.

“Why did you do this?” she asked Jeff, barely holding back sobs.

Jeff smiled kindly. “Life throws challenges at us, Jennifer. It’s up to us to rise above them or let them break us. You’ve stayed strong for your kids, and I admire that. I figured you could use that money more than I could. Just promise me one thing—when the time comes, pay it forward.”

Jennifer nodded, tears spilling down her cheeks. “I will. I promise.”
