The versatile actor we’re talking about became a household name in 1979 when he starred as Captain Benjamin Willard in Apocalypse Now. His portrayal of the troubled soldier made a lasting impact on audiences and helped propel his career into the spotlight. But that was just the beginning.
This actor, who has since received multiple Emmys, SAG Awards, and Golden Globes, has become one of America’s most beloved and respected performers. His journey to fame, though, wasn’t easy, and it’s a story of perseverance, love, and family.
Growing up, Martin Sheen didn’t see himself as poor. His family’s struggles were common where he lived, and everyone around him seemed to be in the same boat. Despite the hardships, he remained strong and learned valuable lessons early on.
Tragically, he lost his mother before he turned eleven. But instead of breaking him, this loss made him stronger, more patient, and deeply grateful for his father.
“I didn’t know we were poor. We all had the same conditions. But losing my mom changed me, made me appreciate life and my father more,” Martin later reflected.
When Martin was around six or seven, he began to visit the movies, and that’s when he realized that acting was his true calling. The magic of the screen captivated him, and he knew he wanted to be part of it.
However, before he could step into the world of acting, Martin had to work. As a high school student, he worked as a caddy at a fancy golf club in Dayton, Ohio, helping his father with finances and gaining unforgettable life experiences.
Martin was drawn to theater in high school, particularly the drama club. He even participated in several plays, but his heart was fully committed to acting. A key influence on his path was Father Alfred Drapp, who supported Martin’s dreams and gave him the funds to move to New York City and pursue his passion.
His first theatrical role was in Herman Wouk’s The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial, where he played a court stenographer. It was just the start of his career. However, Martin soon realized that his birth name, Ramón Antonio Gerardo Estévez, was too difficult for people to pronounce. So, in his early twenties, he decided to change it.
He chose the name “Martin Sheen,” taking inspiration from two people who had influenced him deeply. The first was Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen, an American figure who inspired Martin’s faith, and the second was CBS casting director Robert Dale Martin.
While he adopted this new name professionally, he kept his original name on his personal ID.
Martin’s personal life soon intertwined with his career. He met Janet Elizabeth Templeton in the winter of 1960 when she moved from Ohio to New York. Janet, who was born in Ohio on July 8, 1944, had spent the first six years of her life in Kentucky with her grandparents.
The two hit it off instantly and quickly became inseparable. Janet was an actress and producer, known for her roles in Kennedy, Beverly Hills Brats, and The Way.
“From the moment we met, I knew she was special,” Martin recalled. “We just clicked. It felt like fate.”
Their early years together weren’t easy. Financial troubles forced them to move in with Martin’s father and brothers. But despite the challenges, their love grew stronger.
Eventually, Martin found a small apartment in the same building where legendary actor Paul Newman lived, and they made it their home. It was in this building that their second son, Ramón, arrived unexpectedly.
Janet went into labor so quickly that they couldn’t make it to the hospital in time. With the baby stuck in the birth canal and Janet bleeding heavily, Martin was terrified. But as he called for an ambulance, he remembered Janet telling him that the placenta was coming out.
At first, Martin thought they were having twins, but fortunately, when they got to the hospital, both mother and son were declared healthy.
However, their trials weren’t over. While filming Apocalypse Now in the Philippines, Martin suffered a heart attack. It was a terrifying moment that threatened to end his life. Janet rushed him to the hospital in Manila, and as they pushed him down the hallway, she whispered to him, “It’s just a movie.” Her calm, reassuring words helped him regain his strength.
“I realized she was right,” Martin said. “It was just a movie. I was going to be okay.”
The experience brought them even closer together, strengthening their bond in ways they hadn’t imagined.
After his heart attack, Martin faced a long road to recovery. “I fell apart completely,” he admitted. “My soul was exposed. I shed a lot of tears. My beard and eyes turned gray.” During his critical care, Janet never left his side, sleeping on the floor beside him.
But Martin knew that in order to heal, he had to take responsibility for his health. His wife’s unwavering support helped him get back on track. Over time, Martin fought not just for his health but also to overcome his battle with alcoholism.
It wasn’t until ten years after his first heart attack that he finally got sober, a huge milestone in his personal journey.
In December 2015, Martin underwent quadruple bypass surgery. Even in the midst of his recovery, Janet kept him grounded with her humor. “Don’t be so hard on yourself,” she would tell him. Her constant support helped him through the toughest times.
As they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary during the COVID-19 pandemic, Martin couldn’t help but reflect on the key to their enduring love. “I was lucky to marry the scariest lady I’d ever met,” he said with a chuckle. “She’s the most honest person I’ve ever met. It wasn’t always easy, but her candor kept me grounded.”
Janet, on the other hand, joked, “It was impossible.”
But their marriage lasted because of that honesty. They faced life’s challenges head-on, always communicating openly with each other. When Martin had to film away from home, their children knew it meant missing school, but they understood the sacrifices their parents were making.
Martin’s children—Emilio, Ramón, Carlos (Charlie Sheen), and Renée—grew up to pursue successful careers of their own. Emilio, a director, producer, and screenwriter, rose to fame as part of the “Brat Pack” in the 1980s.
Through it all, Martin’s love for his family remained unwavering. “I couldn’t keep up with her,” Martin confessed about Janet. “She’s just too level-headed and direct. But I learned to appreciate it over the years.”
And so, Martin Sheen’s life is one of triumph, love, and unwavering commitment to his family. He’s faced personal struggles, but with Janet by his side, he has always found a way to overcome them.
