A heartbreaking tragedy struck Albany, New York, on December 7, 2024, when two young children lost their lives after falling through thin ice at Washington Park Lake. The victims were a 12-year-old boy and an 11-year-old girl. Their deaths have left the community grieving and struggling to understand how such a tragedy could happen.
According to police, the boy tried to cross the frozen lake to reach a nearby lake house. Unfortunately, the ice was not thick enough to support him, and he fell through. In a brave act of friendship, the girl, who was with him, rushed to help but also fell through the ice. It was a tragic moment of both courage and desperation.
Emergency services rushed to the scene around 4:35 p.m. that afternoon. They managed to pull the girl from the water, and she was quickly taken to Albany Medical Center Hospital. Despite their best efforts, she passed away on December 10, just days after the accident.
The boy’s body was found later during a secondary search by the New York State Police underwater recovery team. His death, too, was a devastating blow to the community.
The Albany Police Department released a statement expressing their condolences: “The Albany Police Department extends its heartfelt condolences and support to the families and friends of both children during this difficult time.”
Due to their ages, the children’s names were not released to the public, further deepening the privacy and respect surrounding the tragedy.
Both children were students at North Albany Middle School, which is part of the City School District of Albany. After the boy’s death, the district immediately made counseling services available to students and staff, offering support in the aftermath of the incident.
When the girl also passed away, the district shared additional resources to help the grieving school community cope with the devastating loss.
Superintendent Joseph Hochreiter spoke emotionally about the loss, saying, “Our school community was heartbroken yet again Tuesday to learn that the second North Albany Middle School student involved in Saturday’s tragic accident in Washington Park has died.
Our hearts go out to the family of this student, who gave their life trying to save their friend. We will remember that selfless courage even as we mourn another unimaginable loss.” His words captured the depth of grief felt by the school, the families, and the entire community.
In response to the tragedy, the city took immediate action to prevent future accidents. Washington Park was marked with “Keep Off the Ice” signs, a clear warning about the dangers of venturing onto frozen bodies of water. Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan emphasized just how dangerous the ice had been, noting that it was incredibly thin.
“Two young people ventured out onto the ice. It was very thin. It was shocking they made it as far out into the lake as they did,” she explained. Sheehan also urged the community to stay vigilant and reminded everyone, “It’s just a reminder of how fragile life can be and how important it is that we ensure that our children and everyone in our community know venturing out onto the ice is not safe.”
This tragic loss has left a heavy sadness in Albany, especially during the holiday season, which is usually a time of celebration. The entire community is mourning, reflecting on the fragile nature of life and the deep impact of losing two young lives in such a heartbreaking way.
