Sally Field has always been a Hollywood icon in my eyes—a legendary actress with a career full of unforgettable moments. At 76, she’s shared the screen with countless leading men and had her fair share of on-screen kisses. But when asked to name the worst of those kisses, she hesitated at first—until she finally spilled the beans.
Sally Field is widely recognized as one of the most talented and versatile actors of her generation. Her incredible performances in both movies and TV shows have captivated audiences for decades. Who could forget her powerful role in Steel Magnolias?
That unforgettable funeral scene where she perfectly captured the emotions of love, loss, and heartbreak is etched in my memory.
Sally’s talent shines through in other beloved roles as well. She’s known for her work in Erin Brockovich, The Flying Nun, Gidget, Forrest Gump, and Smokey and the Bandit.
Born in Pasadena, California, Sally came from a working-class family with ties to the entertainment industry. But her early life was far from glamorous. In her memoir, Sally revealed that she was abused by her stepfather and had to undergo a secret abortion at the age of 17.
Despite these challenges, she grew up to be a kind, humble, and incredibly talented woman.
Sally hasn’t slowed down one bit. In 2020, she starred in the TV series Dispatches From Elsewhere as Janice. And in 2022, she took on the role of Jessie Buss in the hit show Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty, which dives into the lives of the Los Angeles Lakers during the 1980s.
Given how active she is, it’s no surprise that Sally often appears in interviews. On December 1, during an episode of “Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen,” Sally decided to reveal her worst on-screen kiss after a fan’s daring question.
When asked, Sally, 76, laughed and said, “Oh boy. Do I really need to name names?”
“I think you should,” 54-year-old Cohen encouraged.
Finally, Sally gave in. “All right. This is going to surprise you. Hold on, people,” she teased before revealing that the worst kiss was with none other than Burt Reynolds, her former boyfriend.
“But weren’t you dating at the time?” Cohen quickly asked.
Sally explained that while filming Smokey and the Bandit, she often had to “look the other way” during their kissing scenes because it “just wasn’t something he really did for you.” She also mentioned that Burt had a habit of “drooling” during their on-screen smooches.
Sally and Burt first met on the set of Smokey and the Bandit in 1977 and dated for nearly five years. According to the New York Post, Burt reflected on their relationship in his memoir But Enough About Me, where he expressed regret and wished he had done more to mend things between them. Sadly, Burt passed away at 82 due to cardiac arrest.
In March, Sally shared with Variety why she had stopped communicating with Burt during the last 30 years of his life. “He was not someone I could be around,” she explained. “He was simply not a good fit for me at all. Additionally, he somehow created the illusion that I was more significant to him than he had previously believed, even though I wasn’t.
All he wanted was the thing that he was without. Simply put, I didn’t want to handle that.”
Sally’s honesty, both about her past and her relationships, shows the strength and wisdom she’s gained over the years. Her story is a reminder that even in Hollywood, real life is often more complicated than it seems on screen.
