Queen Mary experienced a real shock during her visit to Greenland on July 4, 2024: The wife of King Frederik was standing amidst a crowd when she was hit by a motor scooter.
It was a tiny moment of carelessness that brought Queen Mary, 52, to her knees: During an event in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, the Danish royal was struck by an unknown person on a scooter. This was captured in video footage released by the Danish “Ekstra Bladet” on July 5 on its website.
Queen Mary hit by scooter in Nuuk
In the video, the 52-year-old can be seen from behind: Her brunette ponytail and brightly patterned sweater are unmistakable. Mary is engaged in conversation with people surrounding her from all sides when suddenly, a dark motor scooter drives into the crowd and hits the Queen. Mary then kneels down, disappearing from view within milliseconds and completely unexpectedly. The video also captures the surprised voices of those around her, with many arms reaching out to catch the Queen. One of her security guards immediately rushes to her aid and addresses the person riding the scooter.

The royal security officer quickly tries to get the man on the scooter to step back. Meanwhile, Mary fortunately manages to stand up again and signals with small hand gestures and a slight nod that she is doing okay under the circumstances. The man responsible for the accident is just as shocked as Queen Mary and those around her: His trembling voice can be heard in the background of the video as he tries to explain himself: “I don’t know what happened.” Mary herself does not say anything immediately after the incident.
Palace can give the all-clear: No one was injured
After the accident, journalists from “Ekstra Bladet” promptly contacted the Danish Palace. It seems that Queen Mary had a lucky escape: The palace can give the all-clear. It is confirmed that it was “a minor collision, in which however no one was injured.” Both the Queen and the people around her are fine.
