Patti Scialfa Opens Up About Her Cancer Battle
Patti Scialfa, who is not only Bruce Springsteen’s wife but also a talented member of the E Street Band, has bravely shared her story about battling cancer for the past several years.
In a heartfelt moment during Springsteen’s new documentary, Rock Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 8, Patti revealed that she was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2018.
Multiple myeloma is a type of cancer that affects the plasma cells in the blood, making it challenging for the body to fight infections. This diagnosis has made it tough for Patti to join Bruce on tour with the E Street Band.
She explained, “This affects my immune system, so I have to be careful what I choose to do and where I choose to go.” Because of this, she made the tough decision to step back from touring.
Despite her health challenges, Patti still finds joy in performing. “Every once in a while, I come to a show or two and I can sing a few songs on stage, and that’s been a treat,” she shared.
“That’s the new normal for me right now, and I’m OK with that.” It’s clear that music still holds a special place in her heart, even if her appearances are less frequent.
Balancing Family and Music
Patti also mentioned that during Bruce’s current tour, which kicked off in February 2023, she chose to play only a few shows. One of the reasons for this decision was to spend more time with her granddaughter, Lily Springsteen, who was born in July 2022.
“I didn’t feel as needed in a way because there were a lot of musicians on stage,” Patti explained. “I did the first couple of shows, and as I saw how it was all rolling, I thought, ‘This is good. This is completely intact. There’s not much room for me to add anything special.’”
In addition to family time, Patti used this opportunity to focus on her solo music. She said, “The main thing was I have a record that I couldn’t have finished when Bruce was home because he’s in the studio all the time.
So I took that opportunity to do my record.” It’s inspiring to see her channel her experiences into her music, showing her resilience and creativity.
Bruce Springsteen’s Health Journey
Patti isn’t the only one facing health challenges in the Springsteen family. In September 2023, Bruce had to postpone his remaining tour dates for the year as he was receiving treatment for peptic ulcer disease. This news was tough for fans, but they understood that health comes first.
Then, in early summer 2024, Bruce had to postpone more tour dates due to “vocal issues.” Thankfully, this only affected three shows. Fans have shown their support for both Bruce and Patti during these difficult times, proving that their music family stands strong together.
Sending Love and Support
As Patti continues her battle with multiple myeloma, many fans and friends are sending their love and prayers her way. It’s a reminder of the strength and courage it takes to face health challenges, especially in the public eye.
