The day before had been a whirlwind of energy and chaos. As a private tutor, my schedule was packed with little kids learning their ABCs and a feisty eight-year-old trying to conquer fractions. By the time I dragged myself home, I was completely exhausted. My husband, Adam, greeted me with his usual bright grin and a steaming cup of herbal tea.
“How’s my favorite teacher?” he asked, his eyes full of warmth and affection.
“Exhausted,” I said with a tired chuckle, sinking into the couch as I kicked off my shoes.

“I’ve been seeing someone,” she said, her voice dripping with excitement. “He’s perfect—charming, successful, and, oh, those dimples!”
I laughed politely, though something about her tone made me uneasy.
“That’s great, Lily,” I said, trying to stay casual. “Do I know him?”
She hesitated for a moment, then added, “Probably not. He’s a manager at some firm. Says he’s working late tonight, but we’re sneaking off to that boutique hotel across the street. It’s all very thrilling!”
My heart dropped into my stomach. Dimples. Manager. Working late. My mind was spinning—this sounded exactly like Adam. Could it be? My husband? My Adam?
“Do you have a picture?” I asked, trying to keep my voice steady despite the storm swirling inside me.
“Of course!” Lily said, pulling out her phone with a smile.
She scrolled through her gallery, and my heart stopped when she showed me a photo of a man who looked strikingly familiar. There, on her screen, was Adam, smiling widely, with his arm casually draped around Lily.

Adam walked up to me, his dimples flashing as he said, “Happy birthday, sweetheart,” before pulling me into a hug.
I buried my face in his chest, mortified. “I thought you were cheating on me,” I mumbled, still in shock.

As we walked toward Adam’s car, I saw something that made my face turn bright red. Scrawled across the windshield in bright red lipstick were the words: “CHEATER!!!”
I groaned in embarrassment, covering my face. “I might’ve called James before the party…” I admitted, my voice barely above a whisper.
Adam burst out laughing. “It’s washable, right?” he asked, trying to catch his breath. “Besides, it’s a great story for the kids someday!”
And just like that, we spent the end of my birthday scrubbing lipstick off the car, laughing together under the moonlight. It wasn’t the celebration I had expected, but it was one I would never forget.
