My Landlord Kicked Us Out for a Week So His Brother Could Stay In the House We Rent

Share this:

When Nancy’s landlord demanded that she and her three daughters leave their rental home for a week, she thought things couldn’t possibly get worse. Little did she know, the ordeal would reveal a betrayal that would change everything.

Our house wasn’t perfect—it was old and creaky, with peeling paint in the kitchen that I jokingly called “abstract art.” But it was home. It was where my daughters—Lily, Emma, and Sophie—filled the air with laughter and turned every ordinary day into something special.

I worked as a waitress, scraping by just enough to cover the rent and bills. There wasn’t room for mistakes or emergencies. Every penny was accounted for, and every month felt like a victory. But it was exhausting.

One morning, as I hung laundry out to dry, the phone rang. I balanced the receiver between my shoulder and ear while holding a sock in my hand.

“Hello?” I said.

“Nancy, it’s Peterson,” came the gruff voice of my landlord. My stomach knotted instantly.

“Oh, hi, Mr. Peterson. Is everything okay?”

“I need you out of the house for a week,” he said. His tone was as casual as if he were asking for a favor.

I froze. “What? Why?”

“My brother’s visiting. He needs a place to stay. I told him he could use your house.”

For a second, I thought I’d misheard him. “Wait, this is my home. I have a lease!”

“Don’t start with that lease nonsense,” he snapped. “Remember when you were late on rent last month? I could’ve kicked you out then, but I didn’t. You owe me.”

I clenched the phone. “I was late by one day, and my daughter was sick. I explained—”

“Doesn’t matter,” he interrupted sharply. “Be gone by Friday, or maybe don’t come back at all.”

“Mr. Peterson, please! I don’t have anywhere else to go!”

“Not my problem,” he said before hanging up.

I stared at the phone, my heart pounding like a drum. How could he do this? Tears pricked my eyes, but I forced them back. I had to stay strong for my girls.

“Mama, what’s wrong?” Lily, my oldest, appeared in the doorway, her brows furrowed with worry.

I forced a smile, hiding the storm inside me. “Nothing, sweetheart. Go play with your sisters.”

But it wasn’t nothing. It was everything. By Thursday, I packed up what little we could carry. I told the girls it was an adventure, but even they sensed something wasn’t right.

The place we ended up in was far from ideal. A tiny, run-down hostel with walls so thin you could hear every cough and whisper from next door. The girls tried to be brave, but it was hard.

“Mama, it’s too noisy,” Emma complained, covering her ears.

“I know, baby,” I whispered, stroking her hair.

By the third night, Sophie, my youngest, cried herself to sleep. She couldn’t stop asking for Mr. Floppy, her stuffed bunny, which I’d accidentally left behind in our rush to leave.

“Please, Mama, I need him,” she whispered, her tear-streaked face breaking my heart.

That was it. I couldn’t take it anymore. I had to get her bunny back.

Late that night, I drove to the house. My hands shook as I knocked on the door, my mind racing with what might happen. When the door opened, I was shocked to see a man I didn’t recognize.

“Can I help you?” he asked, looking puzzled.

“I—I’m sorry to bother you,” I stammered. “I’m the tenant here. My daughter left her stuffed bunny inside. Could I please get it?”

His brows knit together. “You live here? My brother said this place was empty.”

I stared at him, my emotions bubbling over. “It’s not empty! This is my home. My kids and I are stuck in a hostel because your brother made us leave!”

His face darkened, and he muttered under his breath, “That lying—” He stopped himself, took a breath, and said, “Come in. Let’s find that bunny.”

Inside, the house looked the same, but it felt strange being back. He introduced himself as Jack and helped me search Sophie’s room. Finally, we found Mr. Floppy under the bed.

When I held the bunny, tears filled my eyes. “Thank you.”

“Nancy, tell me exactly what my brother said to you,” Jack urged, his voice firm but kind.

I hesitated, but I told him everything. His jaw tightened as I spoke, his anger evident.

“That’s unacceptable,” he said, pulling out his phone. “I’m fixing this.”

“Wait! What are you doing?” I asked.

“Calling my brother,” he replied.

The call was heated, with Jack demanding answers and making it clear he wouldn’t tolerate such behavior. When he hung up, he turned to me.

“Pack your things. You’re moving back in tonight. I’ll figure out where to stay.”

I stared at him, overwhelmed. “Are you sure?”

“Yes. And my brother will cover your rent for six months. It’s the least he can do.”

That night, Jack helped us move back. Sophie lit up when she saw Mr. Floppy, and her joy made everything feel right again.

Over the next few weeks, Jack kept showing up—not just to check on us, but to help. He fixed things around the house, brought groceries, and even joined us for dinner. Slowly, he became a part of our lives.

The girls adored him. Lily sought his advice for school projects. Emma roped him into games, and Sophie invited him to tea parties with Mr. Floppy.

One evening, as we sat on the porch after the girls went to bed, Jack turned to me.

“I’ve been thinking,” he said softly. “I don’t want you or the girls to ever feel scared of losing your home again. Will you marry me?”

Tears welled in my eyes. “Yes!”

A month later, we moved into a cozy little house Jack found for us. Each girl had her own room, and I finally felt at peace. As I watched my daughters settle into their new home, laughter filling the air, I knew one thing for sure: we were finally home.
