I was living a peaceful life on Maple Street when I made a simple agreement with my neighbors, Jim and Susan. We decided to put up a fence for some privacy.
There was no paperwork involved—just a friendly handshake. I built the fence right near the property line, and Jim and Susan were thrilled. They got the benefit of the fence without spending a penny.
But everything changed when Jim and Susan moved away about a year ago. A new neighbor, Kayla, a city realtor, moved in. Not long after, she had a land surveyor come by to mark the property boundaries. One day, Kayla knocked on my door with a serious look on her face.
“Your fence is nine inches on my property,” she said firmly. “You need to move it or pay for the land.”
I was taken aback. Without any written agreement with Jim and Susan, I had no choice. So, reluctantly, I took down the fence.
But the story didn’t end there. A week later, Kayla came back, but this time she looked upset. “Please, can you rebuild the fence?” she pleaded. “My dog, Duke, needs it to stay safe.”
I couldn’t believe the change in her tone. After her earlier demands, now she was asking for my help? I wasn’t in the mood to be generous, so I refused.
Kayla tried to manage without the fence by putting up a flimsy bamboo barrier, but Duke, her energetic dog, easily broke through it. Things quickly spiraled out of control.
During a neighborhood garage sale, Duke escaped again, and in the chaos, Kayla’s purse was stolen. The whole neighborhood found the situation amusing, but Kayla was clearly struggling.
She tried everything to keep Duke contained, but nothing worked. One evening, she came to my door again, this time practically begging. “I’ll pay for it,” she said desperately. “Just please rebuild the fence.”
Even though I felt a bit sorry for her, I stood my ground and refused. I wasn’t going to rebuild that fence.
Eventually, I decided it was time for a change. I sold my house and moved to a new place, where I could enjoy some peace and quiet again.
Looking back, I realize that having Kayla as a neighbor pushed me to find tranquility elsewhere. Whenever I share this story with friends, it always gets a good laugh. It’s a reminder that sometimes, karma has a funny way of balancing things out when you least expect it.
