My Brother Kept Insulting My Husband for Being ‘Just an Electrician’ – But Karma Had the Last Laugh
My brother and I are totally different—except for one thing: we both never give up! We grew up in a family where everyone had white-collar jobs. We both found success, but we took very different paths. I married Mark, an electrician who runs a really successful business. But my brother just can’t see beyond the title “electrician.”
After years of putting up with his mean comments, I finally had enough. But before I could teach him a lesson, karma swooped in.
I was raised in a nice home by parents who worked very hard to give us everything we needed. My mom is a brain surgeon, and my dad runs his own business. My older brother, Jack, became a lawyer, but he loves to show off his wealth more than actually working hard to build his own practice.
He enjoys a flashy lifestyle, with fancy cars, expensive clothes, and constant bragging. He’s even engaged to his third fiancée, who he treats like another trophy to flaunt.
I, on the other hand, have always been more down-to-earth. My husband Mark and I live comfortably, but we prefer a simple life. What Jack doesn’t know is that Mark, besides being an electrician, also went to business school. He built a company that makes four times what I earn!
Even with all that success, Mark stays humble. He puts a lot of his money back into the business and helps out charities. My parents truly appreciate his kindness, especially when we surprised them with an all-expenses-paid cruise for their 30th wedding anniversary.
But Jack’s arrogance never changes. One Mother’s Day, after I treated our mom to some relaxing spa sessions, Jack handed her a flashy, expensive watch. With a proud look on his face, he said, “This watch is a limited edition. The salesperson knew I was a lawyer and gave it to me right away!” Then, he turned to Mark and sneered, “An electrician could never afford something like this.”
Mark, always gracious, just smiled and let it slide. But I could see the hurt in his eyes. Jack kept mocking Mark’s job, treating it like it was something unimportant. Little did Jack know, Mark could easily buy his law firm and still have money left over! But we stayed quiet, knowing that Jack’s time would come.
And it came sooner than I thought!
A few weeks later, at a family barbecue, Jack made his usual grand entrance—showing up late, of course, in his prized Porsche with his fiancée by his side. He strutted around, bragging about his latest court victory and the fancy honeymoon he was planning for his next wedding.
Just as I was about to compare my real designer purse to the cheap knock-off he got for his fiancée, a loud commotion caught our attention outside.
We all rushed out to see Jack’s beloved Porsche being hooked up to a tow truck! Panic spread across his face as he shouted at the driver, “This must be a mistake!” The driver shook his head and replied, “Sorry, it’s being repossessed. You’re months behind on payments.”
Jack turned pale, and as he stood there in shock, his fiancée quietly slipped into the house, embarrassed. Alone and vulnerable, Jack finally admitted the truth—he had lost his job! A major case he messed up had caused his firm to be sued, and now no one wanted to hire him. His debts had piled up, and he could no longer keep up with his extravagant lifestyle.
In that moment, I felt a strange mix of pity and satisfaction. Life had taught Jack the humility I had always wanted him to learn. Without saying a word, I walked over to him and said softly, “Maybe this is a sign to rethink things.” For the first time, Jack’s arrogance disappeared, replaced by a vulnerability I had never seen before. “I guess I had this coming,” he admitted, looking down.
Before I could respond, Mark stepped forward and put a hand on Jack’s shoulder. “If you need work, I could use an extra set of hands in my company. It’s not glamorous, but it’s honest work and pays well.”
Jack looked stunned. “You’d actually hire me after everything I said?”
Mark smiled warmly and replied, “Everyone deserves a second chance.”
As the sun set that day, Jack accepted Mark’s offer. He worked hard, starting from the bottom and learning the trade. Over time, his arrogance faded away, replaced by a newfound respect for honest work and deep gratitude for the chance he had been given.
Karma had done its job, but in the end, our family was still there for Jack. The road ahead wouldn’t be easy, but we were with him every step of the way. And maybe, just maybe, he became a better man because of it.
