Prince Harry has made a bold decision: he won’t bring Meghan Markle back to the UK. In a gripping ITV documentary called Tabloids on Trial, which aired on July 26, the Duke of Sussex spoke out about his deep concerns for their safety if they were to return to Britain with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
“It’s still dangerous, and all it takes is one lone actor, one person who reads this stuff to act on what they have read,” Harry revealed in the documentary. “Whether it’s a knife or acid, whatever it is, these are genuine concerns for me. It’s one of the reasons why I won’t bring my wife back to this country.”
Back in January 2020, Harry and Meghan made headlines when they announced they were stepping back from their royal duties. By June of the same year, they had relocated to California, where they currently live with their two children.
Their decision to leave royal life also meant they lost their right to police security in the UK, a decision enforced by the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures. Despite this setback, in 2023, Harry challenged this ruling in court, even offering to fund his own security detail.
In a heartfelt court declaration, Harry explained that safety concerns had compelled them to leave the UK. These concerns were underscored by Neil Basu, the former head of counterterrorism for the Metropolitan Police, who revealed “disgusting and very real” threats against the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
Although Harry’s legal battle against the UK government in February 2024 did not end in his favor, he retains the right to appeal the court’s decision regarding his family’s access to police protection.
The documentary Tabloids on Trial delved deeper into Harry’s ongoing struggles with the British press, including a lawsuit against a media organization for allegedly hacking his phone.
Harry acknowledged that these legal challenges had strained relations within the royal family. Despite this, he stood firm in his condemnation of what he described as a “torrent of abuse from the press.”
“It would be nice if we tackled this as a family,” Harry reflected in the documentary. “I believe that when you’re in a public role, these are the things we should address for the greater good.”
In a poignant moment, Prince Harry opened up about Meghan’s mental health struggles in their 2022 Netflix documentary, Harry & Meghan. He admitted feeling “devastated” upon learning of her su:ic:id:al thoughts.
“I never expected it to reach that point,” Harry admitted. “Realizing it had, I felt anger and shame. I didn’t handle it as ‘husband Harry’ but more as ‘institutional Harry.’ My royal role overshadowed everything.”
These revelations shed light on Prince Harry’s profound challenges and unwavering commitment to safeguarding his family amidst intense public scrutiny.
