Kevin Costner is stepping away from “Yellowstone”. He will not return for the final episodes of the fifth season.
It’s official now: Kevin Costner, 69, will not be returning to “Yellowstone”. The second half of the fifth and final season of the Western series will proceed without its lead actor.

In a video statement on X, Costner personally announces his departure. This decision contrasts with his earlier stance. In a TV interview with “Deadline”, he had left the door open for a comeback.

After spending the last year and a half filming his new movie western “Horizon”, he has reflected on his future with “Yellowstone”. He has concluded that he “won’t be able to” continue with the series in “Season 5B or beyond”. “It was something that really changed me,” says Kevin Costner about the series that revived his career. “I loved it. And I know you loved it,” he tells his fans. “I love the relationship we could develop. See you at the movies,” concludes the actor in his message. “Horizon” premieres in Germany on August 22nd. The film, which Costner also directs, is intended to be the start of a multi-part saga.
John Dutton Was Disappointed by His Colleagues
In his video message, Kevin Costner does not specify reasons for his departure from the role of John Dutton. However, in interviews over recent weeks, he has repeatedly mentioned tensions behind the scenes that led to his temporary exit, now revealed as permanent. For instance, he was criticized for infrequent set appearances and having other priorities. In an interview with “People” published a few days ago, he expressed being “disappointed” that none of his “Yellowstone” colleagues defended him. “Wow, when is someone going to say something about what I did, as opposed to what I didn’t do?” Costner lamented.
When Will the New Episodes of “Yellowstone” Arrive?
Just before the actor’s announcement, Paramount had revealed the start date for the second part of the fifth season. The first of the six final episodes is set to air on November 10, 2024. The first part of the last season had premiered in November 2022.
