Keanu Reeves is one of the most beloved stars of his time. People who meet him have nothing but nice things to say. So when he revealed some bad news, fans were understandably concerned.

Keanu, now 59 years old, shared a story about how he broke his kneecap while filming. Given his action-packed career in movies like The Matrix and John Wick, you’d think the injury came from a dangerous stunt. But what really happened? Something surprisingly simple.

Stephen Colbert was the one who asked, “What happened? How did they get to you?”

In his usual laid-back and tough-guy style, Keanu responded with a grin, “No one got to me. Accident got to me.”

Colbert, not satisfied with that answer, pressed on. “So, what was it? Did you jump between buildings? Roll over sharp objects like razor blades? How did you end up hurting yourself?”

Keanu laughed, shaking his head. “No, Stephen. I was just walking into a room—my dressing room. Let me tell you what really happened.”

Keanu explained that he was filming a scene for the upcoming comedy Good Fortune, alongside Aziz Ansari and Seth Rogen. The three actors had just finished spending time in an icy plunge pool, and Keanu was warming up by doing what he called the “cold shuffle” in a room with padded carpeting. But as he was shuffling around, his foot got caught on something in the floor.

To show exactly how it happened, Keanu stood up in front of Stephen’s desk and demonstrated how his knee gave out. “I spiked, man. I spiked hard,” he said, slamming his hand down as if hitting the ground. “I just drove it straight into the floor.”

He continued, shaking his head in disbelief. “My kneecap—my patella—broke like a chipped potato. And I didn’t even realize it at first. But when my knee popped, I knew something was seriously wrong.”

Keanu, always able to laugh things off, added, “Comedy is hard, man.”

Stephen, laughing along, pointed out, “But Aziz and Rogen weren’t exactly filming an action movie, right?”

“Nope,” Keanu replied with a smile. “It was comedy.”

“Welcome to my life,” Stephen joked, still laughing.

Back in January, Keanu was spotted on set using crutches and keeping an ice pack on his knee. But despite the injury, he kept working.

Good Fortune, the movie they were filming, is special because it marks Aziz Ansari’s directorial debut. Along with Keanu, the film stars Sandra Oh and Keke Palmer, with Aziz co-writing and co-producing the project.

Even though the injury wasn’t from a wild stunt, Keanu’s story shows that sometimes accidents happen in the most unexpected ways—even during a simple “cold shuffle.” As always, Keanu handled it with grace and his signature sense of humor.
