In an interview with “Vanity Fair,” the actress looked back on filming the iconic scene, providing insights into the chaos behind the camera. According to Winslet, filming this sequence was anything but smooth and simple.
While Rose and Jack lived a perfect romance on screen, Winslet described a rather chaotic situation on set. “My God, he’s a real romantic,” she joked about her co-star DiCaprio. “No wonder every young girl in the world wanted to be kissed by Leonardo DiCaprio.” But she added, “It wasn’t how you imagine it.”
Makeup and Lighting Issues
According to Winslet, constant makeup checks were necessary as her pale makeup kept transferring onto DiCaprio. “By the end, it looked like I had licked a caramel chocolate bar after every take,” she recalled. DiCaprio, on the other hand, looked like “a piece of his face was missing.” Winslet summed it up: “Oh God, it was such a mess.”
Filming the scene was, according to Winslet, a “nightmare.” Besides the makeup issues, there were also problems with the lighting and access for the makeup team. Additionally, she kept bumping her knee on the railing.
But the challenges didn’t stop there. Winslet said multiple takes were required to get the scene right. “Leo couldn’t stop laughing, and we had to redo the shots about four times,” she explained.
