Over the last two years, Simon Cowell has faced two serious bike accidents that left him with big health challenges. Recently, he joined his fellow America’s Got Talent stars—Howie Mandel, Terry Crews, and Heidi Klum—on the Today Show and opened up about what happened.
The 64-year-old TV star’s first accident was in Malibu in 2020 while riding an e-bike. Then, in early 2022, he went through it all over again with another accident in London. In a promo for the 18th season of America’s Got Talent, Simon was asked how these experiences had changed him.
Reflecting on those scary moments, he admitted, “I wasn’t in great shape beforehand, so the accidents were a rude awakening.” He realized just how much his body needed care after those painful crashes.
He described his journey as a wake-up call. “It was like a ‘god’ moment,” he said, explaining how the accidents forced him to slow down and look after himself. But despite everything he’d been through, Simon was quick to clarify one thing: “I’m not giving up on my bike,” he insisted with a smile, drawing laughs from his fellow judges. Cycling was still something he enjoyed and wasn’t willing to let go.
Simon’s second accident was less severe than the first but still serious. This time, he ended up in the hospital with a concussion and a broken arm, which meant he had to wear a wrist brace for months. His first accident had been far worse; it had broken his back and required metal rods to support his spine.
Through all the pain, one thing kept him going—his nine-year-old son, Eric. Determined to stay strong for him, Simon made big lifestyle changes, and his fiancée, Lauren Silverman, was by his side through every step of his recovery.
Talking about the emotional toll, Simon revealed in an interview with The Sun that his back injury brought him to a dark place. “I was in such a dark place that, for the first time, I considered going to therapy,” he admitted, describing how tough it was to try and be there for Eric while healing. His bond with his son became his driving force to recover.
In fact, Simon shared a moment that lightened the mood during his recovery. When Eric saw him with the metal rods in his back, he gave his dad a playful new nickname. “Dad, you look like Iron Man,” Eric joked, and Simon couldn’t help but smile and play along, saying, “Yes, I really am like Iron Man.” This sense of humor and connection with Eric brought a spark of joy even in tough times.
Simon has held onto that humor despite all he’s been through. During a 2021 episode of AGT, Terry Crews asked if Simon could picture himself doing stunts like the ones in a Shaolin Kung Fu act. With a big laugh, Simon answered, “After my back injury, just walking around the garden with Eric felt like a big feat. Sometimes I even thought, ‘Maybe this isn’t the best idea.’”
Simon’s journey is one of strength, humor, and love. The accidents may have been challenging, but he’s still full of life, grateful for his family, and ready to get back on his bike. He’s found happiness in his role as a dad, his time with his son, and even in making the most of each day.
