We’ve all had those nights where a special outing takes an unexpected turn for the worse. Amelia recently shared a story about a dinner that went from wonderful to awful in just a few moments. Her experience brings up important questions about how much to tip, what good customer service looks like, and the best way to handle confrontations.
Subject: I Took Back My Tip Because of a Rude Waitress
Amelia writes:
“Last night, my husband and I decided to celebrate his big promotion by dining at a lovely restaurant. The evening started off perfectly, and we were enjoying ourselves thoroughly until the very end, when our waitress’s bad attitude completely ruined the experience.
When the check arrived, our total was $85. I left a $10 tip on the table, thinking it was appropriate. But as the waitress picked up the money, she sneered and exclaimed, ‘Ten bucks? This isn’t the 1950s anymore!’ Her condescending tone caught me off guard, and I could see that my husband was just as surprised as I was.
Already feeling annoyed, I responded, ‘Excuse me? I believe $10 on an $85 bill is a fair tip.’ Instead of dropping the issue, she rolled her eyes dramatically and shot back, ‘The standard tip these days is 20%. Do you not know how to calculate that?’ Her sense of entitlement and blatant rudeness were absolutely infuriating.
At that point, I couldn’t hold back my frustration anymore and snapped, ‘With that kind of attitude, you don’t deserve a tip at all!’ I reached over and quickly grabbed the $10 bill back from the table. Things escalated quickly as the waitress began to loudly berate me, throwing insults and causing a huge scene that drew the attention of everyone dining around us. My husband looked completely mortified by what was happening.
Thankfully, the manager noticed the commotion and rushed over to intervene. He firmly told the waitress to stop and escorted her away from our table, but she continued to yell at me even as she was being led out. In the end, we decided to leave without leaving any tip.
Now that I think back on it, maybe I overreacted by taking the tip back, but her dismissive and disrespectful behavior was just too much to ignore. Since then, I’ve been caught in heated debates with friends and family about whether I should have just let it go instead of causing a scene. What do you think?”

A tipis a showof appreciation for goodservice.
When servicewages were low a generoustip meant thatthe customer feltthatthe server went well above their payscale.
Wages cameup n thisself imposed gratuity scale stayed the same. If I’mignoredor forgotten while dining(busy nighttaken intoconsideration) it’sbasedon mypersonal judgementof how good myservice was.
You want 20%tip? Show it with goodservice. Bitchaboutit, youjust lost yourtip.
That waitress was Way out of line and if I had been her boss she would have been fired on the spot. I applaud the lady for taking the tip back. If that bitch had yelled at me like she did that lady I probably would have ended up getting arrested. I normally have total empathy for waitresses and others who make a living off from tips but this waitress was something else again and I have no sympathy for her at all, even if she did get fired which she should have. There is no excuse for that type of behavior.
