Inheritance problems can get out of hand quickly. That’s what happened to Daphne when her father passed away and left her his house. She thought things would be simple—she asked her stepmother to either pay rent or move out. But when her stepmother refused, Daphne made the tough choice to evict her.
Little did she know, what seemed like a straightforward decision would lead to an unexpected, shocking twist that left her reeling and confused.
Here’s Daphne’s story:
“My dad passed away and left me his small house. I asked his wife, my stepmother, to pay rent since he had left her $10,000, or she could go live with her son. Instead of being reasonable, she refused and snapped, ‘How dare you?’
I couldn’t believe her reaction, so I had no choice—I evicted her. A whole year went by, and I didn’t hear a single word from her. Then, yesterday, out of the blue, she called me and demanded to see me. I didn’t want to go, but I agreed to meet her.
When I got to her place, my heart dropped. She was living in a small apartment, and she told me something that made my blood run cold. She said my dad had bought the apartment for her before he died, using the rest of his savings so she’d have a safe place to live if she ever got kicked out. I was in shock.
Then she dropped another bombshell. She said my dad made her sign a deal that the apartment would go to me after she passed, but only if she stayed in the house she shared with my dad. But since I forced her to leave, she now has the right to give the apartment to anyone she wants. And guess what? She’s leaving it to her son.
Once the shock wore off, I was furious. I had only been trying to protect my rights. She had money—she could’ve paid rent. The house wasn’t some free hotel for her to stay in. And now, the apartment my dad paid for is going to her son, not me! The worst part is I had no idea about this apartment. I feel like I’ve been lied to and betrayed.
