My life was turned upside down when my husband, Charles, died in a tragic work accident. He was my rock, my partner, and without him, I felt like I was drowning. For three long years, I struggled to keep my head above water, holding myself together for the sake of our six-year-old daughter, Maggie. She was my everything—my reason to keep going, my little ray of sunshine in the darkest of days.
Then, Jacob came into our lives.
Jacob was kind, patient, and had a smile that made you feel like everything would be okay. He was gentle with me and, most importantly, he adored Maggie. He played with her, read her stories, and made her laugh in a way I hadn’t seen since Charles passed. Slowly, I let my guard down. I let Jacob into my heart, and before I knew it, we were building a life together.
Two months ago, Jacob and I got married on a small farm with a duck pond. It was a simple, beautiful ceremony, and for the first time in years, I felt like I could breathe again. Maggie was thrilled to have a “new dad,” and I was hopeful for our future.
But one night, as I tucked Maggie into bed, she looked up at me with her big brown eyes, clutching her favorite stuffed rabbit tightly.
“Mommy?” she said hesitantly, her voice soft and unsure.
“Yes, sweetheart?” I replied, brushing her hair back.
“New Dad asked me to keep a secret from you. Is that okay?”
Her words hit me like a punch to the stomach. My heart raced, and I felt a cold sweat break out on my skin. I tried to keep my voice calm. “What kind of secret, Maggie?”
She fidgeted, biting her lip. “New Dad said I shouldn’t tell you… but yesterday, when you were at work, I woke up early from my nap and went looking for him. He promised we could play on the PlayStation, but I couldn’t find him anywhere.”
My stomach churned as she continued. “I called for him, but he didn’t answer. Then I saw him and a pretty lady in a red dress come out of the basement. He told me not to tell you.”
I froze. “A lady in a red dress? In the basement?”
Maggie nodded. “She had long blonde hair, like a princess. And she smelled nice, too.”
The basement? Why would Jacob take a woman down there? My mind raced with questions, but I didn’t want to scare Maggie. I kissed her forehead and told her everything was okay, but inside, I was panicking.
Later that night, after Maggie was asleep, I confronted Jacob. He was lounging on the couch, scrolling through his phone.
“Maggie told me there was a woman here yesterday,” I said, crossing my arms. “She said you took her to the basement. Care to explain?”
Jacob looked up, his expression calm. “Oh, that? She’s an interior designer. I wanted to surprise you by fixing up the basement. It’s been a mess for years, and I thought it would be nice to have it done up.”
He stood and led me to the basement, flipping on the lights. To my surprise, the dingy space had been transformed. The walls were freshly painted, new furniture had been added, and soft lighting gave the room a cozy feel.
But something didn’t sit right with me. Why had he kept it such a secret? And why did Maggie’s description of the woman make me feel so uneasy?
That night, while Jacob was asleep, I grabbed my laptop and checked his social media. I scrolled through his photos, my heart pounding. Then I saw it—a picture from two years ago, before we had even met. Jacob was smiling broadly, his arm wrapped around a woman with long blonde hair and a crimson dress.
The next morning, I showed Maggie the photo. “Is this the woman you saw, sweetheart?” I asked, my voice tight.
Maggie nodded. “Yes, Mommy. That’s her.”
My heart sank. I didn’t know what to think, but I knew I couldn’t ignore this. When Jacob left for work, I grabbed the hidden cameras I’d installed in the garage and porch after Charles’s death. I placed them in the basement and living room, determined to find out the truth.
Later, I told Jacob I had a last-minute work trip and would be gone for a few days. I took Maggie to my mom’s house and explained what was going on. Then I checked into a nearby hotel, where I spent the night glued to my laptop, watching the camera feed obsessively.
Hours passed, and nothing happened. Jacob sat on the couch, drinking milk straight from the carton, eating chocolate-covered pretzels, and watching TV. He seemed… normal. I started to feel foolish, like maybe I was overreacting.
But the next morning, as I sat by the window eating breakfast, my phone buzzed with a notification. My heart stopped when I saw the live feed.
Jacob was in the basement with the woman in the red dress. They were kissing. I watched in horror as she whispered something in his ear, and they both laughed.
He was cheating. In my home. With my daughter in the house.
I grabbed my keys and raced back to the house, pulling into the driveway just as Jacob was walking the woman to her car. When he saw me, his face turned pale.
“What are you doing here?” he stammered.
“Get out,” I demanded, my voice shaking with anger. “Both of you. Get out now.”
The woman rolled her eyes, got into her car, and sped off. Jacob tried to apologize, but I cut him off. “I don’t want to hear it. Pack your things and leave.”
The next day, I packed up all of Jacob’s belongings into trash bags and left them by the door. Then I drove to my mom’s house to pick up Maggie. I took her out for ice cream, and as she happily dug into her sundae, I leaned over and hugged her tightly.
“You did the right thing by telling me the truth, sweetheart,” I said, tears in my eyes. “I’m so proud of you.”
As I looked at Maggie, I realized something important. I didn’t need Jacob. I had my daughter, my home, and the strength to keep going. We were going to be okay.
