Weddings are supposed to be full of joy and celebration, but as Shanize walked down the aisle, I couldn’t shake a strange feeling. Something felt seriously off, and it gnawed at me. I kept trying to push it away, thinking it was just wedding jitters—weddings can make anyone nervous, right? But the more I watched Shanize walk, the stranger everything seemed.
Her steps weren’t smooth—they were hesitant, awkward, almost like she was struggling to move. I leaned over to Dave’s sister, Heather, and whispered, “Do you see that? Her walk… something’s not right.”
Heather looked quickly down the aisle and then shrugged. “Janice, you’re overthinking it,” she said with a soft smile. “She’s just nervous. It’s a huge day for her.”
Her words didn’t comfort me. In fact, the weird feeling inside me grew even stronger. As Shanize got closer, her steps looked more and more labored. Her dress was flowing oddly, like something was off underneath it. I knew I couldn’t ignore it anymore.
Even though Heather warned me not to make a scene, I just had to figure out what was going on. My heart was pounding as Shanize finally reached the altar. I couldn’t stop myself—I bent down and lifted the hem of her dress.
What I saw underneath made my blood run cold.
Instead of delicate bridal shoes, there were big, shiny men’s shoes. I couldn’t believe my eyes. My mind was racing, trying to make sense of it. I looked up and noticed something else—hidden under the white gown were suit pants.
That’s when it hit me—this wasn’t Shanize.
I stared in shock, my heart racing, and slowly looked up. The person in front of me was a man, wearing a wig and a veil. Panic surged through me. I turned to Dave, whose face had shifted from joy to pure confusion. His smile disappeared, and his voice shook as he called out, “Janice? What’s going on?”
The whole room went dead silent, everyone stunned by what was happening. The man in the wedding dress didn’t seem bothered at all. Calmly, he took off the veil and then pulled off the wig, revealing short, dark hair. The crowd gasped in shock, whispers quickly spreading through the room.
With a smug grin, the man said, “Surprise! You didn’t even notice, did you?”
Dave’s face went pale as he looked around, completely lost. His voice trembled with fear as he demanded, “Where’s Shanize?”
The man, who I suddenly realized was Dave’s best man, chuckled and said casually, “She’s gone. She left a few days ago. But don’t worry—she asked me to do this. She wanted you to have this moment.”
The church was filled with murmurs as people tried to figure out what was going on. I was frozen in place, trying to process what I had just heard. Why would Dave’s best man be involved in something so bizarre?
Dave’s face was white as a sheet, and his hands were shaking as he stammered, “What are you talking about? What did you do to her?”
The best man raised his hand as if to calm everyone down, but his words did the exact opposite. “Relax, Dave. She’s fine. She just wanted you to know what it feels like to be blindsided.”
Dave’s confusion deepened, and he shook his head, desperately trying to understand. “What do you mean?”
The best man’s smile grew wider, and his voice became sharp and cruel. “She found out, Dave. About you and Vanessa.”
Suddenly, the entire room went silent. Dave stood completely still, his face twisted in horror. “No… that’s not true,” he whispered weakly.
“Oh, it is,” the best man continued, his voice filled with satisfaction. “She found out about your affair with Vanessa, one of her bridesmaids. She figured it all out a few days ago. Sure, she could’ve canceled the wedding, but where’s the fun in that? She wanted everyone to see the real you.”
Gasps filled the room as people realized what was happening. I glanced over at Vanessa, who was sitting a few rows back. Her face was pale, her eyes glued to the floor. She looked like she might faint at any second. Dave, on the other hand, looked like his whole world was crashing down around him. He frantically shook his head, muttering, “No, no, this can’t be happening.”
The best man’s voice grew louder, now full of bitter satisfaction. “Oh, it’s happening, Dave. You betrayed her, and now you’re paying for it.”
The room exploded into chaos. Guests were talking over each other, trying to make sense of the shocking scene unfolding in front of them. Dave, wild with desperation, reached out to me, grabbing my arm. “Janice, please, this isn’t what it looks like,” he begged.
But I just looked at him, my heart sinking. “Dave… what have you done?”
The best man didn’t wait for a response. He turned and walked away, leaving Dave standing there, completely alone, as his entire world fell apart.
