Grandmother Excludes Youngest Grandson from Will and Leaves Him Only a Dusty Chest – Story of the Day

When Luke complained to his grandmother, Elizabeth, about how unfair his inheritance was, he never expected the consequences. Elizabeth, upset by his behavior, took drastic action. She took him off her will and left him with an old, dusty chest. Luke didn’t know what to do with it, so he stored it in the attic and forgot about it for years. Little did he know, his daughter, Meredith, would soon discover the secrets hidden inside.

It all started when Elizabeth, at the age of 80, decided it was time to divide her wealth among her three grandsons: Tom, Aidan, and Luke. She invited them to her house in Milford, Connecticut, for tea and made a big announcement.

She told them what they would inherit after she passed away. Elizabeth had carefully thought it out. The eldest, Tom, would get her luxurious oceanfront penthouse in Miami, worth millions. The middle grandson, Aidan, was to receive her beautiful home in Milford, which was just as valuable.

“And finally,” Elizabeth said, finishing her tea with a smile, “Luke will inherit the money in all my accounts.”

Tom and Aidan were thrilled with her decision, but Luke wasn’t.

“Grandma! How could you give the best stuff to my brothers?” Luke shouted, his voice rising in anger. “That’s not fair! Everyone knows you don’t have that much money in your accounts!”

Elizabeth’s face tightened, and both of Luke’s brothers stared at him in shock. They couldn’t believe he would lash out like this.

“Luke, calm down!” Tom snapped. “You can’t yell at Grandma like that. You sound so entitled. She doesn’t have to give you anything!”

Luke shot back, his face reddening with frustration. “You’re both happy because you’re getting all those millions of dollars in property, but I’ll be lucky if I get a few thousand! You don’t get it!”

Aidan, too, scolded Luke. “You’re acting like a spoiled brat. You don’t deserve anything if you keep this up,” he said, shaking his head.

Luke, furious and feeling misunderstood, stormed out of the house, slamming the door behind him.

Tom and Aidan remained behind, offering their gratitude to Elizabeth. “We’ll talk to Luke. Don’t worry, Grandma,” they promised her. They knew their family didn’t have anyone else left, not since their mother and father had died in a boating accident when Luke was 18. The three brothers had already inherited a significant fortune from their parents. But despite their assurances, Elizabeth couldn’t help but feel troubled by Luke’s behavior.

Two years later, when Elizabeth passed away, the brothers gathered for the reading of her will. Tom and Aidan received exactly what Elizabeth had promised them—the penthouse and the house in Milford. But when the lawyer called Luke up, the news wasn’t what he expected.

“Luke,” the lawyer began, “Elizabeth changed her will after we completed the first draft. She loved you dearly, but she decided to leave you this antique chest, which she cherished.”

Luke couldn’t believe it. He felt his anger bubbling up again. “What? A chest? That’s all I get? What kind of joke is this?”

Tom, sensing his brother’s rage, tried to calm him down. “Luke, just stop! Grandma was upset with how you acted. You need to understand that.”

Aidan, less patient, yelled back, “This is probably Grandma’s way of teaching you a lesson! She was the only family we had left, and you treated her like that! You’re so ungrateful! Take the chest and think about what you’ve done!”

Luke’s face turned crimson with fury. He looked at his brothers, his hands trembling with rage, then stormed out of the room, leaving everyone in stunned silence.

A few days later, the chest arrived at Luke’s doorstep. He didn’t even bother opening it. He shoved it into his closet and tried to forget about it. He cut off all contact with his brothers and tried to move on with his life.

Years passed, and Luke married a kind woman named Lidia, who didn’t care about money. Together, they had a daughter named Meredith. She was everything to Luke, and he loved her dearly. One night, as they were putting Meredith to bed, Luke confessed to Lidia, “I was so mad at Grandma back then, but now I feel ashamed of how I acted. I think being the youngest made me jealous. I was a terrible person.”

Lidia smiled softly, brushing a lock of hair from his forehead. “You’re not like that anymore, Luke. You’ve grown and learned. It’s okay.”

As time went on, Meredith grew into a curious and funny little girl, always asking questions and enjoying the thrill of solving mysteries. Maybe that’s why she loved playing in the attic, exploring old boxes full of forgotten treasures.

One afternoon, while Lidia was out shopping, 10-year-old Meredith stumbled upon the old chest in the attic. Excited, she brought it downstairs to Luke. “Dad! What’s in here? This box looks so mysterious! Does it have a treasure inside?” she asked eagerly, her eyes wide with wonder.

Luke looked up from his book, surprised. “Oh, sweetheart, that’s not just a box, that’s a chest. Where did you find it?” he asked, taking off his glasses.

“It was in the attic! Can I have it?” Meredith asked, her voice full of excitement.

Luke paused. He hadn’t thought about that chest in years. “Sure, honey. You can have it. It was Grandma’s, and she gave it to me years ago. You want to open it with me?” he asked, smiling.

Meredith cheered, and they both struggled with the latch, which had gotten stuck over the years. After a little effort, Luke managed to open it. His eyes widened in shock. “Oh my god…” he whispered. Inside the chest, he found gold bars—real gold bars. There were several of them, each one gleaming under the light.

“Dad, these are real gold bars, right?” Meredith asked, her eyes shining as she touched one of them. “And what does ‘100 gr’ mean?”

“It means it weighs 100 grams, sweetheart,” Luke answered, still in disbelief. His heart raced as he realized what was happening. There were ten gold bars in the chest.

Meredith’s voice interrupted his thoughts. “Look, Dad! There’s a letter!” she exclaimed, handing him an envelope. Inside was a letter from Milford Bank, along with a key. “What’s this key for?” she asked.

Luke was speechless. “This must be a key to a safety deposit box at the bank,” he said, slowly piecing things together.

When Lidia returned from shopping, Luke eagerly explained everything. She encouraged him to go to the bank and investigate. The next day, Luke went to Milford Bank and met with the manager, Mr. Paxton, who seemed thrilled to see him.

“Oh! You must be Elizabeth’s grandson! I thought you would never come to visit us!” Mr. Paxton said with a smile. He led Luke to the safety deposit box and opened it. Inside, Luke found even more gold bars—each one weighing a full kilogram—and precious gemstones. “Your grandmother didn’t trust digital banks. She preferred to keep her wealth in material things,” the manager explained with a grin. “Is there anything you’d like to withdraw today?”

“No, not today,” Luke replied, still trying to process what he had just discovered.

When he returned home, he immediately called his brothers. After telling them about the chest, the gold, and the safety deposit box, Aidan burst out laughing.

“I knew Grandma was trying to divide everything equally! But your attitude made her hide it from you! This is awesome!” Aidan chuckled.

Luke laughed too. “You’re right. I can’t believe it. I guess I learned my lesson.”

He soon patched things up with his brothers and felt closer to them than ever. He was finally ready to share his newfound wealth with his family, but he would never forget how he had acted years ago. The lesson he learned would stay with him forever.

What can we learn from this story?

First, don’t act entitled to anyone’s money, no matter how much they have. You are not owed anything, not even from your relatives. Luke learned this the hard way.

Second, never leave a mystery chest unopened. You might be sitting on a treasure without even realizing it!
