The caring staff at the orphanage named her Xueli, which means “Snow White” (Xue) and “beautiful” (Li) in Chinese.

Xueli was born with albinism, a genetic condition that makes her skin, hair, and eyes very light because her body doesn’t produce enough melanin. While some people saw her as different, she was about to show the world that her unique beauty was something to celebrate. Luckily, she was adopted by a loving Dutch family who nurtured her and helped her feel special.
At just 11 years old, Xueli’s life took a thrilling turn. A designer from Hong Kong noticed her and invited her to model for a photoshoot. The campaign aimed to showcase various types of beauty, and the designer called it “perfect imperfections.” “She asked if I wanted to join her fashion show in Hong Kong,” Xueli said in an interview with the BBC. “That was an amazing experience.”
But the journey hasn’t been easy for Xueli. Many people with albinism face stigma, prejudice, and discrimination because of how they look. In some extreme cases, they are even hunted due to myths about their bodies having magical powers. Reflecting on her situation, Xueli said, “I’m lucky I was only abandoned.”
Sometimes, models with albinism are cast as angels or ghosts in media, which makes Xueli sad. “It makes me sad,” she shared, wishing people would see her and others for who they truly are.
Despite the challenges she faces, Xueli is determined to make a change in the world. “I’m not going to accept that children are being murdered because of their albinism. I want to change the world,” she declared with passion.
