‘Get Out!’ Lawyer Returns from Work Early & Hears Wife Making His Mother Cry — Story of the Day

Jessica was a young mom, but she hadn’t realized how much she had taken her caring mother-in-law for granted. Olivia, David’s mother, was always there, quietly supporting the family, but Jessica barely noticed. That all came crashing down one day when David walked in and caught Jessica yelling at his mother—his own mother, who was crying. What David had planned next was a lesson Jessica would never forget.

For most moms with a three-year-old toddler, a day filled with spa visits, brunch with friends, and movie outings feels like a dream far away. Even enjoying a quiet moment to eat a candy bar without interruptions is rare. But Jessica lived this kind of unusual, easy life—and it was all thanks to Olivia, the mother-in-law who loved her like her own daughter.

Jessica’s life seemed perfect on the surface. She had a handsome, successful husband named David. He was the most respected lawyer in town. After years of hard work and late nights, he finally earned enough to buy their stunning lakeside home, two luxury cars, and put plenty of money aside to give their little girl the best education possible.

Jessica was lucky to have Olivia around, even though she’d never admit it aloud. Olivia had moved in the very day she found out she was going to be a grandmother.

“Don’t you worry, Jess! I’m here for you. Whatever you need, I’ve got you, honey,” Olivia had said with a gentle kiss on Jessica’s cheek, lightly touching her growing baby bump.

During the entire pregnancy, Olivia was like a guardian angel. She cooked, cleaned, made sure Jessica ate well, and took care of every little detail to keep both mother and baby healthy.

Then came the big day. Jessica’s water broke suddenly, and David was away on an important business trip—an all-too-common situation during the most critical times of his career. But Olivia didn’t waste a second. She rushed Jessica to the hospital, weaving through heavy city traffic with urgency and care. Olivia stayed outside the labor room for three long hours, silently praying for her daughter-in-law and the unborn child’s safety.

When Jessica finally held her tiny baby girl for the first time, Olivia whispered softly, “Rose.” She had picked the name after her favorite flower, hoping the child would grow to be as beautiful and strong as a rose.

That moment was more than three years ago now. Jessica had recovered fully, and she had plenty of free time—but she was hardly ever at home. Olivia, at 67, still worked just as hard as ever to keep the household running smoothly.

The only things that brought her real happiness were her bright-eyed granddaughter Rose and the rose garden she had lovingly planted in front of the house. It was Olivia’s little paradise.

Olivia tried her best to overlook Jessica’s growing selfishness and laziness. For a whole year, she didn’t argue with her daughter-in-law, hoping to keep the peace and spare David the stress. David often felt stuck between the two strong women, unable to fix their growing tension.

But Olivia started noticing changes in little Rose. The child needed her mother more than ever. One day, Olivia finally decided to speak up again.

“My dear Jessica, you know how much Rose loves you. She’s growing up so fast! Just the other day, she cried for over an hour after you left for a party. She wouldn’t eat a thing until you came back. You didn’t get home until midnight, and she went to bed hungry…” Olivia said quietly.

Jessica didn’t even look up from her nails. “Sounds like somebody’s failing as a grandmother,” she snapped coldly.

The words hit Olivia like a knife. She was stunned, hurt, and almost speechless. But Jessica wasn’t done yet. She was warming up to unleash more of her anger on Olivia, who sat quietly in the room, feeling crushed.

That evening, David came home early from work. As he stepped inside, he found Rose curled up in the corner of the living room, her small face streaked with tears and a scared look in her eyes. David’s heart sank. He scooped her up, gently wiping her tears, and asked himself worriedly, “What’s going on here?”

Then he heard Jessica’s voice coming from the bedroom, sharp and angry: “Get out! You’re never going to be part of this family. Especially when you can’t even take care of your own granddaughter without complaining!”

David froze. His blood boiled with anger and pain as he found Olivia sitting quietly across the room, tears silently falling onto her faded dress.

“That’s ENOUGH!” David shouted, pointing a furious finger at Jessica.

“How dare you yell at my mother—”

“How dare you talk to her that way? Who gave you the right? She’s the only one who actually takes care of the house and Rose. And you? You spend all my money on parties, clothes, and spa days while ignoring your own child!” His voice cracked with emotion.

But David knew yelling wouldn’t be enough to change Jessica. She had grown up in a wealthy family and never learned the value of money or family. So he took a hard step: he emptied her purse—no more cash, no more credit cards.

“If you want this life of luxury,” he said coldly, “you’ll have to pay for it yourself. No more free rides from your husband. No more free babysitting from your mother. You do it all.”

Jessica was furious but had no choice. The very next day, she found herself working at a mall boutique, thinking it would be an easy, glamorous job. But by the end of her first day, her hands were sore from folding clothes, her feet ached from standing, and her boss had yelled at her twice for putting things in the wrong place.

Each evening, Jessica came home exhausted. She barely had the energy to play with Rose, who by now preferred playing with her dad and grandma. Jessica scolded the little girl, fed her somehow, and fell asleep minutes after putting Rose to bed.

Every morning was a new challenge—getting breakfast ready, bathing Rose, cleaning the house, and rushing to work on time.

Still, Jessica stubbornly thought she could prove them all wrong.

Then one evening, Rose showed her something heartbreaking.

“Look, Mom! They’re all gone… they’re all dead!” Rose cried, pointing at the dried-up flowers in the rose garden.

Jessica’s heart sank. She had completely forgotten to water the roses—the very garden Olivia had nurtured with so much love.

“Grandma’s roses… Grandma will be so sad,” Rose whispered.

Seeing the neglected garden was a wake-up call for Jessica. That night, she sat down beside Olivia, tears in her eyes.

“I took so much for granted… especially you, Mom. I’m sorry. I’m a mess without you,” she confessed.

Olivia smiled softly, wiping Jessica’s tears.

“We all are,” David said, walking in with Rose—and a basket of laundry that had turned pink from a red sock left inside.

From that day forward, Jessica changed. She threw herself into caring for her family and working hard. She still found time for little pleasures, like rebuilding the rose garden with Olivia. Every week, she surprised Olivia with a fresh bouquet, a small thank you for everything.

What can we learn from Jessica’s story?

Never forget the quiet hands that support you. Jessica never realized how much Olivia’s care meant until she almost lost it. Sometimes, you only appreciate what you have when it’s gone. Jessica learned the hard way how important family love and respect truly are.
