Shelby Daniele, a shining star at both Cal Poly and Buchanan High, passed away unexpectedly at the young age of 23, just months after earning her master’s degree in agriculture. Her sudden death came as a shock to her family, friends, and the athletic communities at both her college and high school in Fresno, California.
Shelby was known for breaking records in track and field, excelling in her studies, and having a heart full of kindness.
When the news of her passing spread, those who knew her best—her hometown friends and family—began sharing their memories of her.
On September 26, 2024, the Cal Poly Track and Field team announced Shelby’s death on Instagram, expressing deep sadness and paying tribute to her. The post highlighted Shelby’s five years of dedication as a university athlete, noting her achievements in both sports and education.
She had been a leader, serving as team captain, and was admired for her commitment to the team. The post read, “Shelby was truly one of a kind and will be missed dearly by everyone in the Cal Poly community.”
Shelby’s legacy as an athlete began at Buchanan High School, where she first made a name for herself as a track star. The school also shared their grief on Facebook, remembering her for the incredible athlete she was and the caring person she had become.
They recalled her standout performance at the 2019 California State Meet, where Shelby won the 200-meter race and helped her team claim the championship. Buchanan High emphasized how Shelby continued to support their track and field program even after she graduated, always giving back to the community that shaped her.
Shelby’s high school track coach, Brian Weaver, had nothing but admiration for her. “Shelby was everything you want a young athlete to be,” he said. He warmly remembered how she led her team to victories and continuously pushed herself to grow as both an athlete and a person.
Weaver shared a special memory from the 2019 state championships, where Shelby, exhausted after a grueling weekend of races, approached him and said, “Coach, I’m so tired and sore, but I’m going to keep pushing for the team.”
Shelby’s unexpected passing has left a deep hole in the hearts of everyone who knew her. People remember her not just for her athletic achievements but also for her generosity, kindness, and leadership. She left behind a lasting legacy, and the many lives she touched will carry her memory forward.
