Couple asks neighbor to take kids at 3am, stunned when the answer is ‘no’

Helping a neighbor in need can be very rewarding, but sometimes the request is just too much. This story is about finding that line.

Labor can be stressful, especially for parents. If labor starts unexpectedly, making childcare arrangements can be tough. Even with a plan, sudden labor can throw everything off.

One woman shared her experience on Reddit to get feedback. A 26-year-old mother posted about moving to a new apartment complex a year ago. All the neighbors moved in around the same time and were still getting to know each other.

The kids in the building played together in the shared courtyard, and many young families often helped each other out.

The young mom remembered helping other moms with various child-related tasks and providing baby formula. However, she mentioned she hadn’t made close friends with any of the other moms and usually kept to herself.

She was alone with her two-year-old and eleven-month-old children while her husband was visiting friends and family. In their building, the moms usually helped each other with childcare, taking turns. She participated silently but never offered to help because she didn’t want anyone else looking after her kids.

One night, at three in the morning, there was a knock on her door. Being home alone with her kids, she didn’t open it at first. But when the knocking persisted, she finally checked. It was her neighbor, who was nine months pregnant and had just gone into labor.

The neighbor, with her hospital bag and boyfriend, asked if she could watch their kids for an hour until their aunt arrived.

She refused, explaining she didn’t want to risk waking her kids or be responsible if something happened. The neighbor’s children were one and four years old, and she felt handling four kids would be too much. She also noted that the one-year-old was strongly attached to their primary caregivers and would be hard to calm.

Her partner got angry, saying, “How can a mother see another in trouble and do nothing?” She believed her husband wouldn’t have spoken to her that way if he had been home. To see if she was wrong, she turned to Reddit.

Many people on Reddit agreed with her. One user, Schezzi, said, “The parents left their kids’ safety until the last minute. They had nine months to prepare.” Another user, BrinaGu3, felt it was inappropriate not to help someone in an emergency.

Later, the original poster updated that the neighbor’s aunt didn’t arrive until eight in the morning. The neighbor who took in the kids woke up her own children, and none of them slept the whole night. The neighbor’s kids also left a mess. She mentioned all this to prove she made the right decision by not taking the kids.
