It’s no surprise that people are still talking about Robin Williams and his incredible life. Many wonder how things might have been different if fate had taken a kinder turn for him. His legacy continues to spark conversations and emotions long after he left us.
Billy Connolly, a comedian and one of Williams’ close friends, shared the last words Robin ever said to him more than ten years after the tragic death of the Good Will Hunting star. And those words were as heartwarming as you might expect. “It’s true that humor and Robin Williams go hand in hand,” Connolly said.
Throughout his colorful career, Williams became one of the funniest men ever to grace our screens. Even ten years after his death, people still laugh at the unforgettable comedy he created, which blends gut-busting hilarity with strange, wonderful, and flawed characters.
However, Williams’ life was also marked by deep sadness. On August 11, 2014, he was found dead at home at the age of 63. It seemed he had taken his own life, leaving the world in shock. Despite his massive success as an actor, Williams struggled with personal demons.
He battled alcoholism throughout his career. In 2014, he spent three weeks at the Hazelden facility in Minnesota to focus on his recovery. Reports show that Williams fought against alcoholism and cocaine use in the early 1980s, and he only quit after his friend John Belushi died from an overdose in 1982.
After Williams passed, his representative revealed he had been “battling severe depression.” His wife, Susan Schneider, later disclosed that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease just months before his death.
An autopsy revealed that Williams had Lewy body dementia (LBD), a condition that caused significant changes in his personality, movement, mood, memory, and sleep patterns. This added another layer of struggle to his already challenging life.
The news of Williams’ death hit hard, especially for those who were close to him, like Sir Billy Connolly, who also has Parkinson’s disease. When asked what he might have done differently if he had known Williams was thinking of suicide, Connolly responded, “You have to give a guy the position that he’s wise enough to make up his own mind.”
He added, “I don’t think so,” when asked if he would have tried to save his friend’s life.
At 81 years old, Connolly reflected on his friendship with Williams, sharing that they often talked on the phone about their experiences with Parkinson’s disease and expressed their love and support for each other. When Connolly appeared on the BBC program In My Own Words, he reminisced about their last conversation.
“A week before he died, he called me to ask if I wanted to have dinner,” Connolly remembered. “I love you,” Williams said during the call, inviting him over. Connolly thought back fondly on their last dinner together. Williams asked, “Do you believe me?” Connolly replied, “Obviously, I do.” Williams then declared, “You have my undying love.” Connolly felt that moment was truly special.
However, he couldn’t shake off the feeling of unease. “How strange, how strange for him to say that. It’s not like him normally,” he thought. Tragically, Connolly revealed, “He died during the weekend. I hope you find peace, Robin Williams.”
Even with the struggles that overshadowed his life, Robin Williams will always be remembered for the joy he brought to others. His laughter, warmth, and talent continue to resonate, reminding us of the importance of love, friendship, and reaching out to those we care about.
