The day of Patrick’s funeral was the hardest day of Nancy’s life. She still couldn’t believe he was gone. Patrick had been taken so suddenly in a car accident, and Nancy couldn’t accept the reality.
It felt like a bad dream, something she would wake up from any moment. But as she stood by his grave, watching the dirt fall on his casket, she knew it was real. Her husband was gone forever, and she had to find a way to move on.
After the service, Nancy slowly walked away from the cemetery, lost in her thoughts. She didn’t know how to keep going without him. But as she walked toward the exit, a woman stepped into her path, holding a baby in her arms.
“Are you Nancy?” the woman asked, her voice shaking. The baby in her arms made soft, whimpering sounds.
Nancy stopped, confused. “Yes. Who are you?” she asked, feeling a strange chill run through her body.
“My name is Amanda,” the woman replied. “This is Patrick’s child. Her mother can’t care for her anymore, and I thought you should know.”
Nancy’s heart skipped a beat. Her mouth went dry. “That’s impossible! Patrick would never betray me like this!” she cried out, her voice rising in disbelief.
Without another word, she turned around and walked away, trying to push Amanda’s words from her mind. But doubt began to gnaw at her. What if Amanda was telling the truth? Was there a side of Patrick she never knew?
As she walked to her car, still shaken, Nancy bumped into Mike, one of Patrick’s old friends. Distracted, she exchanged a few words with him, but her mind was elsewhere. She quickly excused herself and got in the car, desperate to get away and think.
But when Nancy opened her car door, her breath caught in her throat. The baby—Amanda’s baby—was lying in the backseat, crying softly. The woman was nowhere to be seen. Nancy’s hands shook as she picked the baby up, wondering if she was dreaming.

Nancy sat in the waiting area, feeding the baby and trying to keep her emotions in check. Her heart was racing. The thought of Patrick betraying her felt impossible, but the evidence was staring her in the face.
When the nurse finally handed her the envelope, Nancy’s hands shook as she opened it. The results were clear: “Paternity rate – 99%.” Patrick had fathered this child.
Nancy stared at the paper, unable to believe what she was reading. Her world felt like it was falling apart. But instead of letting herself fall into despair, Nancy made a decision: she would find the baby’s mother. She had to know the whole story.
She went through Patrick’s belongings, looking for clues, but found nothing useful. Then, she checked his car’s GPS system, and one address kept appearing. It was somewhere Nancy didn’t recognize, but she knew it had to mean something.
She drove there, her mind racing with questions. When she knocked on the door, no one answered. So she turned to the neighbors, hoping for information. To her surprise, it was Amanda who answered the door.
“You?” Nancy asked, stunned. “What are you doing here?”
Amanda hesitated before speaking. “This house used to belong to Emma… the baby’s mother.”
Nancy froze. Emma. Her heart dropped. She remembered that name all too well.
“Emma? Was her last name Warren?” Nancy asked, her voice barely a whisper.
“Yes,” Amanda confirmed.
Nancy’s knees went weak, and for a moment, she thought she might collapse. Emma had been her classmate years ago—the girl Patrick had loved, the girl she had wronged so deeply. Nancy had never forgiven herself for what she had done to Emma all those years ago.
Twenty Years Ago
Nancy had been head over heels for Patrick in high school, but he had fallen in love with Emma instead. When Patrick confessed his feelings for Emma and broke up with Nancy, she was crushed. She couldn’t let go of him.
Jealousy and anger clouded her mind, and she made a decision that would haunt her forever.
Ignoring her mother’s warnings, Nancy set out to tear Patrick and Emma apart. She spread hurtful rumors, created false “accidental” meetings, and used petty tricks to make Emma look bad. But nothing worked. Patrick and Emma’s love was too strong to be broken.
In a final, desperate move, Nancy lied to Patrick, telling him she was pregnant. Patrick, always the responsible one, broke up with Emma and promised to take care of Nancy and their supposed child.
But the lie couldn’t last. After months of pretending, Nancy admitted the truth to Patrick—that the pregnancy was never real. Emma had already left town, heartbroken, and Patrick stayed with Nancy.

Present Day
“I lied to him,” Nancy whispered to Amanda, her voice cracking. “I trapped Patrick out of spite, and it ruined everything. I thought I had buried that part of my life, but now… now I see how much damage I caused.”
Amanda’s face softened. “Patrick and Emma reconnected after many years. They loved each other until the end. Emma passed away shortly after Patrick’s accident. She couldn’t bear the loss.
That’s why I brought the baby to you. I thought she deserved a chance with someone who loved Patrick.”
Nancy’s eyes filled with tears as she looked down at the baby in her arms. “I can’t undo what I did, but I’ll try to make things right. I’ll raise her as my own. Maybe that’s the only way I can honor them both.”
And so, Nancy named the baby Catherine. She poured all her love and care into raising her, determined to make amends for the mistakes of her past.
As Catherine grew, Nancy decided to tell her the truth when she turned sixteen. She feared Catherine might hate her, but she knew she had to face the consequences.
But when the moment came, Catherine surprised Nancy. Instead of anger or rejection, Catherine smiled through her tears and hugged Nancy tightly. “You’re my mom. You’ve always been there for me. Nothing will ever change that.”
Nancy wept, feeling a weight lift from her heart. In that moment, she realized that Catherine’s forgiveness was a gift she didn’t deserve, but desperately needed.
Through Catherine, Nancy believed Patrick and Emma had forgiven her, and she had found a second chance at redemption.
