Amid the devastation caused by the Palisades wildfire in Los Angeles, one $9 million home stood tall and untouched, while hundreds of others were reduced to ashes. The owner of this incredible survival story, David Steiner, can hardly believe how his home managed to escape the flames.
The fires that ravaged Los Angeles this season have destroyed over 20,000 acres of land. They have left behind nothing but smoke and ruin. But despite the severity of the wildfires, emergency teams have managed to contain three of the eight ongoing fires.
However, the damage was immense. More than 5,000 homes, businesses, and historical landmarks were lost, including those of many famous figures like Anna Faris, Eugene Levy, Paris Hilton, and Billy Crystal.
Amidst the chaos, David Steiner—a successful businessman in the waste-management industry—watched in disbelief as his property remained unharmed.
On January 7, Steiner received a chilling video from a local contractor. The footage showed the wildfire’s destructive path as it roared through the area. Steiner watched as flames devoured his neighbor’s home. He thought for sure that his three-story house would be next.
“The contractor was watching the news when he saw the fire take over my neighbor’s house. He told me, ‘It looks like your house is next,’” Steiner recalled during an interview with the New York Post. He was bracing himself for the worst.
But then, something unbelievable happened. Despite the flames surrounding it, Steiner’s home remained standing. He began receiving phone calls, texts, and images from friends and even strangers, all of them saying the same thing: his house had survived.
“I started getting pictures and realized our house had made it through,” Steiner said, still in shock. “This morning, my wife sent me a message saying, ‘Last house standing.’ It was a small moment of joy during a difficult time.”
But how did this happen? What made his $9 million property so resilient to a wildfire that had destroyed so much?
Steiner believes the survival of his house is due to its unique and strong design. Built to withstand earthquakes, his house was constructed like a ship at sea, made to endure the toughest of conditions.
“It’s built with an ultra-durable structure, designed to withstand earthquakes,” Steiner explained. The house is made of stucco and stone, has a fire-resistant roof, and sits on deep pilings that go about 50 feet into the bedrock, ensuring it stands firm even under the most extreme circumstances.
“To be completely honest, I never thought a wildfire could leap across the Pacific Coast Highway and ignite here,” Steiner admitted. “I always assumed if an earthquake struck, this house would stand firm. I never expected it to be the last standing in a fire. But that’s exactly what happened.”
Steiner also credits the materials and architectural choices for his house’s durability. “The design is beautiful, but the stucco and fireproof roof made a big difference,” he said. While it’s hard to imagine anyone planning for a wildfire to strike in the middle of the city, these features ended up making all the difference for him.
As calls and messages of support flooded in, Steiner took a moment to reflect on the bigger picture. Despite the relief he felt that his home was spared, he knew that others had faced unimaginable losses.
“It’s just a house to me, not a home filled with family memories,” he said. “The people who have truly lost everything need our prayers and support.”
Steiner’s thoughts were never far from those who had lost their homes, businesses, and even their loved ones. For him, the survival of his property was a bittersweet victory. His thoughts were firmly with the community, as the true impact of the fires continued to unfold.
This incredible story reminds us of how unexpected and unpredictable life can be. One man’s property stands as a symbol of resilience in the face of disaster, a reminder that sometimes, despite everything, some things survive when we least expect them.
