Her political journey began in the 1988 general elections when she was elected to the Riksdag by the Left Party – Communists (VPK). From 1992 to 1994, she returned to teaching before Prime Minister Ingvar Carlsson appointed her as Minister for Schools.

In 2004, Ylva made a strong comeback when Prime Minister Göran Persson appointed her as the Minister for Health and Elderly Care, replacing Lars Engqvist.
