A mother in Texas made a bold decision to teach her son a lesson he would never forget. After hearing from the school administrators that her son had been bullying other kids, she knew she had to do something drastic to change his behavior.
The school reported that he was calling other students names like “idiots” and “stupid,” which shocked his mother.
The mother, who goes by the name Star, was upset that her son had gone down the wrong path. She decided it was time to take matters into her own hands.
Star wasn’t the kind of parent to just let things slide or sugarcoat the situation for her son. She wanted him to understand the seriousness of his actions and learn from it. So, she made her son wear a T-shirt to school that boldly stated, “I am a BULLY.”
Star wasn’t just trying to embarrass him for fun; she wanted to make sure that everyone, including the other kids at his school, knew the truth about his behavior. She knew that the students at Greenleaf Elementary School already had a pretty good idea that her son was mistreating others.
But by forcing him to wear the humiliating shirt, she made sure everyone, including the students and teachers, would understand that she was holding him accountable for his actions.
She didn’t stop there. To make her point even clearer, Star posted a picture of her son wearing the T-shirt on Facebook. She wrote, “I posted it to reach out to the parents of any of the kids my son may have bullied so that each one of them could get a personal apology.”
She wanted to make sure the parents knew that she wasn’t ignoring her son’s behavior, and she expected him to apologize.
Star explained to the news station KTRK-TV that her son had been calling other boys “stupid” and “idiots.” She said, “I’m a very old-school parent. I don’t coddle my children. I don’t sugarcoat the world to them.”
She wanted to make sure her son understood the consequences of his actions, and she felt that this public punishment would help him realize just how hurtful bullying can be.
However, not everyone agreed with Star’s decision. Many people online criticized her for the way she chose to punish her son. Some felt it was too harsh and could damage his self-esteem. But Star stood firm in her beliefs.
“I wanted to know what he learned from it, and he said, ‘I learned that I didn’t like the way that that felt, and I don’t want anybody else to feel that way because of me,’” Star shared proudly. “That’s exactly what I wanted him to take from it.”
While Star felt that her son learned a valuable lesson, child development experts had a different opinion. A child psychiatrist from Baylor College of Medicine disagreed with her approach. The doctor said, “It’s not a good idea to embarrass your child and reinforce a negative identity in an elementary school child.
She needs to find somebody to help her, and I think the school is one resource.” The doctor believed that there were better ways to help children understand their mistakes without publicly shaming them.
Despite the criticism from the public, Star felt that her son’s school supported her decision. The school made a statement that said, “Parents have the right to make important decisions and take certain actions on behalf of their child.” Star felt confident that she had done the right thing and that her son had learned his lesson.
