The years between 1960 and 1970 were especially busy for her, as she acted in over thirty films in just one decade. Some of her most beloved films include “8½” (1963), “The Leopard” (1963), and “The Professionals” (1966), where she shared the screen with legendary actors Lee Marvin and Burt Lancaster.
One of Claudia’s standout performances came in the classic film “Once Upon a Time in the West” (1968), directed by the great Sergio Leone. In an interview, she recalled her time working with Leone and shared how unique his directing style was. She said, “He would have the actors listen to the score before filming a scene,” explaining how Leone created the music even before shooting started.
Reflecting on her Hollywood journey, Claudia stated, “My main advantage was that I didn’t ask to go to Hollywood; they called me.”
During that time, Hollywood studios were eager to grab any rising star, trying to control all the new talent. They often offered actors strict contracts that could limit their careers. But Claudia cleverly blocked her own path. She accepted one contract at a time and refused to sign an exclusive deal with Universal. This strategy allowed her to continue working and navigate her career at her own pace.
In her three years in Hollywood, Claudia made a big impact with films like “The Pink Panther” and “The Professionals.” She also acted alongside stars like Rock Hudson in “Blindfold” and with legends John Wayne and Rita Hayworth in “Circus World.” On top of that, she mingled with Hollywood heavyweights like Steve McQueen, Barbara Streisand, and Warren Beatty.
Claudia made her Cannes Film Festival debut in 1961 with two films: Mauro Bolognini’s “The Lovemakers,” where she starred with Jean-Paul Belmondo, and Valerio Zurlini’s “Girl With a Suitcase,” in which she played a self-reliant singer. In 1963, she returned to Cannes with two landmark films, Federico Fellini’s “8½” and Luchino Visconti’s “The Leopard.”
Claudia confirmed in an interview that she shot both films at the same time! She revealed, “Visconti wanted me to have black hair, while Fellini preferred me as a blonde.” With long hair at the time, she had to change her hair color every two weeks to meet both directors’ preferences.
After her Hollywood days, Claudia embarked on a three-year career producing films, co-starring with Rock Hudson in “Blindfold” and “Lost Command.” She shared, “At the time, Universal wanted me to sign an exclusive contract, but I said, ‘No, I’m European. I’m going back.’ They were very persistent, though!”
Unlike many actresses of her time, Claudia never participated in a nude scene. She is also a strong advocate for women’s issues and has no interest in getting cosmetic surgery. In one interview, she confidently stated, “I have never engaged in face-lifting—what do you think? My mother always told me, ‘Wait until you are older; you will always be smiling.’ It’s true. Why should I hide that?”
Even today, Claudia remains deeply involved in the entertainment world. Her film “And Now… Ladies and Gentlemen” was shown at the Cannes Film Festival outside of competition. Her last film role was in the Italian-Tunisian production “The Island of Forgiveness.”
